Every streaming service has a horror section, and most of them are a mess: a handful of modern classics buried under algorithm filler and forgettable direct-to-streaming junk. So I went through all nine of my horror guides and pulled the four best picks from each, service by service, so you can find something genuinely scary to watch tonight no matter what you subscribe to.
Each section links to that service’s full guide, where the rest of the lineup lives. If you don’t want to pay for anything, the free picks on Tubi and Kanopy are at the bottom.

The Best Horror Movies on Netflix
Critics and Audience scores from Rotten Tomatoes; ratings from IMDb. Scores as of October 2026.
GREEN ROOM (2015)

Hell is a Nazi-run punk show in this anarchical “trapped in a green room” antidote to the slasher genre. Accordion arm imagery hopefully won’t linger. Fear of Nazi dogs will. Patrick Stewart is chillingly calm as the neo-Nazi boss, and Anton Yelchin and Imogen Poots make the siege feel terrifyingly real.▶ Streaming on Netflix · Read the full review
UNDER THE SKIN (2013)

Scarlett Johansson is a sexy alien (and naked a lot) who comes around to empathizing with the humans she’s been consuming. I dare you to watch without subtitles. Mica Levi’s eerie score is half the experience. Jonathan Glazer shot many of its street scenes with hidden cameras and real, unsuspecting Glasgow men.▶ Streaming on Netflix · Read the full review
28 YEARS LATER: THE BONE TEMPLE (2026)

Spike falls in with a death cult built from bone and finds membership isn’t much better than infection. What’s worse: dying, or losing a piece of your soul in order to survive? Nia DaCosta takes the baton from Danny Boyle, and Ralph Fiennes’ Dr. Kelson gives the franchise its strangest, most humane presence.▶ Streaming on Netflix · Read the full review
HIS HOUSE (2020)

A South Sudanese couple placed in a British council house are told not to move, and the walls hold the debt they crossed the water with. Remi Weekes’ debut uses haunted-house scares to tell a gutting refugee story, and it is frightening on both levels.▶ Streaming on Netflix

SINNERS (2025)

Twin brothers open a juke joint in Jim Crow Mississippi and the music they make there calls something older than the Klan outside. The real thrill is how it makes its deeper ideas textual rather than ornamental. Ryan Coogler’s vampire musical stars Michael B. Jordan as twin brothers opening a juke joint in 1932 Mississippi, and its centerpiece performance sequence is pure movie magic.▶ Streaming on HBO Max · Read the full review
THE CONJURING (2013)

The possession subgenre is terrifying again in James Wan’s haunted house-exorcism hybrid. Rated R by virtue of being deemed “too scary” and for good reason. Good luck sleeping after this one. Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga anchor the scares with genuine warmth.▶ Streaming on HBO Max · Read the full review
TALK TO ME (2022)

Teens pass around an embalmed hand that lets a spirit ride you for ninety seconds, and film each other doing it. Shakes itself into your conscious and roots deeply. Without a doubt the horror movie of its year. Danny and Michael Philippou’s debut is a possession thriller about teens getting high on contact with the dead, and Sophie Wilde is fantastic.▶ Streaming on HBO Max · From my Top Ten of 2023
EVIL DEAD RISE (2023)

The Book of the Dead turns up in an LA apartment building’s parking garage and a mother of three opens it. Not only is there an elevator full of blood, characters come flooding out with it. I could watch one of these every decade.▶ Streaming on HBO Max · Read the full review

TOGETHER (2025)

A twisted, tactile meditation on love, compromise, and the bodily cost of staying too close for too long, brought to life by Michael Shanks’ sharp direction and a pair of knockout performances from Alison Brie and Dave Franco. Together, they make the film’s grotesque intimacy feel oddly, disturbingly relatable.▶ Streaming on Hulu · Read the full review

SPEAK NO EVIL (2022)

A Danish family accepts a weekend invitation from the Dutch couple they met on holiday and won’t leave no matter how bad it gets. Every instinctual alarm goes off and nobody listens. THE BABADOOK (2014)

A widowed mother and her troubled son are menaced by a creature from a pop-up storybook that should never have been opened. Jennifer Kent’s debut is the rare monster movie that is really about grief, and Essie Davis’ performance is devastating.▶ Streaming on Shudder
THE INNOCENTS (2021)

Four kids in a Norwegian apartment block discover telekinetic powers over one summer, and one of them has no reason not to use them. Vogt’s direction is taut and the child performances are great. Empathy and psychopathy in children too young to understand either term.▶ Streaming on Shudder
THE GUEST (2014)

A polite soldier shows up claiming he served with the family’s late son, and he is a little too good to be true. Adam Wingard’s slick, synth-soaked thriller is an absolute blast, and Dan Stevens is magnetic and terrifying in equal measure.▶ Streaming on Shudder · Read the full review

SMILE (2022)

A trauma therapist watches a patient kill herself while grinning and inherits the curse, which passes by witness. It makes full use of its R-rating, going to extremes not often seen in a wide studio release. Parker Finn expands his own short into a feature about a curse passed along by grinning victims, and Sosie Bacon’s unraveling therapist is a terrific lead.▶ Streaming on Paramount+ · Read the full review
IT FOLLOWS (2014)

A demonic STD will not stop hunting Maika Monroe in this deliriously made, minimalist horror-thriller. David Robert Mitchell’s filmmaking is an intellectual puzzle that only gets more bewildering (and better) upon rewatches.▶ Streaming on Paramount+
A QUIET PLACE: DAY ONE (2024)

Essentially an art film about a dying woman’s quest for a final slice of NYC pizza, trojan-horsed into a genre flick, A Quiet Place: Day One boasts an excellent performance by Lupita Nyong’o (Joseph Quinn is also outstanding), helping keep this franchise fresh, relevant, and true to form.▶ Streaming on Paramount+ · Read the full review
SHUTTER ISLAND (2010)

Scorsese’s foray into proper psychological horror boasts Leo, a topsy-turvy Dennis Lehane whodunnit, and whizkid technical elements. The ending is perfect (and not open to interpretation, despite what you may think.) Leonardo DiCaprio and Martin Scorsese turn a 1954 mental-hospital mystery into a twisty, atmospheric psychological thriller.▶ Streaming on Paramount+

GET OUT (2017)

Being black in America got even more scary in Jordan Peele’s genius socio-horror film, which mixes modern slavery with racist yuppies and impales it all on trophy antlers. Jordan Peele’s debut won him the Oscar for Best Original Screenplay, and Daniel Kaluuya’s tear-streaked trip into the Sunken Place is unforgettable.▶ Streaming on Peacock
OBSESSION (2025)

A nice guy wishes his way out of the friend zone and gets a girlfriend who cannot be talked out of loving him. Curry Barker proves himself a genre craftsman with a wicked sense of humor, a mean visual streak, and an unnerving command of tone. Actually scary and actually funny.▶ Streaming on Peacock · Read the full review
WE NEED TO TALK ABOUT KEVIN (2011)

Tilda Swinton plays a mother reckoning with her son’s horrific act and the years of warning signs that led to it. Lynne Ramsay’s fractured, blood-red drama is psychological horror in its purest form, and Ezra Miller is chilling as Kevin.▶ Streaming on Peacock
10 CLOVERFIELD LANE (2016)

An unexpected sequel that launched a mini-verse, 10 Cloverfield Lane isn’t necessarily better for its connection to the previous Cloverfield entry but succeeds by virtue of brutally tense filmmaking and great performances from Mary Elizabeth Winstead and John Goodman.▶ Streaming on Peacock · Read the full review

TITANE (2021)

A woman with a titanium plate in her skull kills, gets pregnant by a car, binds her body flat and passes herself off as a fire captain’s missing son. Ducournau’s Raw was my favorite film of 2017, and this one bites harder.▶ Streaming on Tubi · Read the full review
MIDSOMMAR (2019)

Ari Aster returns with this sun-drenched nightmare epic about a dysfunctional couple who become entangled with a sunny Swedish murder-cult. Florence Pugh is terrific in the lead role. Florence Pugh is devastating as a grieving woman whose relationship falls apart at a sunlit Swedish festival that gets darker by the day.▶ Streaming on Tubi
SANCTUARY (2022)

A hotel-suite two-hander between an heir and the dominatrix he’s trying to retire before taking over the family company. Qualley commands every scene with a gravitational pull as total as the domme she plays. Christopher Abbott and Margaret Qualley spar for control across one hotel suite, and Zachary Wigon keeps the power games unpredictable.▶ Streaming on Tubi · Read the full review
WRONG TURN (2021)

Hikers on the Appalachian Trail cross a self-governing mountain society that has been up there since before the Civil War. A franchise detour that pivots away from everything the series was built on, and is hugely enjoyable for exactly that reason.▶ Streaming on Tubi · Read the full review

THE BEAST (2023)

Titane sees Julia Ducournau use expressive body horror and ostensibly insane plotting to explore the very-real transformative nature of childbearing. A startling and genuinely thrilling work of avant-garde brilliance. Léa Seydoux and George MacKay star across three timelines in Bertrand Bonello’s ambitious, unsettling meditation on love, fear, and artificial intelligence.▶ Streaming on Kanopy
KILL LIST (2011)

Spanning a multitude of subgenres (crime, cult, killers, etc.) this twisty hell-ride from Ben Wheatley (his best film yet) is intensely unpredictable and all the more horrifying for it. Close your eyes if you dare. Ben Wheatley’s genre-shattering descent from kitchen-sink drama to folk-horror nightmare ends in one of the most disturbing finales in British horror.▶ Streaming on Kanopy
POSSESSOR (2020)

A corporate assassin drives other people’s bodies to commit murders, and one host starts driving back. Gore resides in Vos’s soul and on the screen, and Riseborough’s turn as the chilly killer is searing. Brandon Cronenberg’s body-swapping sci-fi horror is clinical and gory, with Andrea Riseborough and Christopher Abbott battling for control of the same mind.▶ Streaming on Kanopy · Read the full review
MOTHER! (2017)

Biblical myth meets anarchical atom bomb in Darren Aronofsky’s intensely provocative arthouse experiment that attempts to tell the modern history of the world through the lens of an enbattled couple.
