Comedy is the genre streaming algorithms do the worst job with: they surface whatever is newest or loudest, and the genuinely funny stuff gets buried. These are the best comedies on Tubi that I’ve reviewed and still stand behind, led by Dinner in America, Theater Camp, and Swiss Army Man.
Every pick links to my full review, and the list gets refreshed as titles come and go.

DINNER IN AMERICA (2022)

Dinner in America is a rough-around-the-edges ode to love on the fringes of society, where a criminal punk rocker and a bizarre loner court an unlikely flirtation, all while navigating the suburbs, musical aspirations and the law. Expect a brash curb-stomp of a coming-of-age saga and prepare for impact.▶ Streaming on Tubi · Read the full review
THEATER CAMP (2023)

Fueled by a script that absolutely sings and the thespian talent and improvisational ingenuity to back it up, Theater Camp is a hysterical and delightful trip to mockumentary perfection that stands as one of the best comedy films of the 2020s. More Molly Gordon in everything please.▶ Streaming on Tubi · Read the full review
SWISS ARMY MAN (2016)

One of the most bizarre and bizarrely beautiful films to grace the Sundance Dramatic Competition, Swiss Army Man is not a film to be puzzled out in one go but that’s ok. It’s mightily entertaining, features two standout performances and has enough raw originality coursing through its veins to make it truly stand in a league of its own.▶ Streaming on Tubi · Read the full review
ON THE COUNT OF THREE (2022)

A jet black comedy-drama with serious issues on its mind, On the Count of Three finds morbid humor and grave sentiment in a pair of besties with a suicide pact. Christopher Abbott is as good as he’s ever been. Jerrod Carmichael’s directorial debut is a pitch-black comedy about two friends at the end of their rope, and Christopher Abbott is terrific.▶ Streaming on Tubi · Read the full review
THE SISTERS BROTHERS (2018)

The Sisters Brothers subverts every waking expectation one has for the Western genre, currying favor with rich, strange performances and a bold penchant for charging down the dirtroad less traveled. Poetic, eccentric, and surprisingly heartrending at times, consider this one from Jacques Audiard a flashbang must-see.▶ Streaming on Tubi · Read the full review
WILD TALES (2014)

Six standalone stories of everyday people pushed to the breaking point and beyond. Damián Szifron’s Argentine anthology is a vicious, hilarious study of revenge, and the wedding finale is a masterclass in escalation. Ricardo Darín’s demolitions expert who snaps at bureaucracy is a cathartic highlight.▶ Streaming on Tubi · Read the full review
JAKOB’S WIFE (2021)

Jakob’s Wife is a total vamp-camp gas with a laugh-out-loud script that’s executed to soul-sucking perfection by the combination of Barbara Crampton and Larry Fessenden. Bloody, fun, and shamelessly ridiculous, Travis Stevens has made a gleeful tribute to vampire’s enduring legacy in the horror genre and highlighted why they make for sure good comedy.▶ Streaming on Tubi · Read the full review
WEREWOLVES WITHIN (2021)

Josh Ruben continues to make a name for himself in the horror-comedy game with his adaptation of Werewolves Within, which employs a supremely-affable ensemble cast, a goofy premise, and plenty of directorial gags to monstrously-amusing effect. Continue to keep a close eye on this guy, he’s apt to transform into a big-timer one of these lunar rotations.▶ Streaming on Tubi · Read the full review
LICORICE PIZZA (2021)

Licorice Pizza is a coming-of-age romantic-comedy that only Paul Thomas Anderson could tell. An anarchic swirl of memories and mood make for a unique, and uniquely hysterical, vision of the woes of friendship and first love.▶ Streaming on Tubi · Read the full review
RIDERS OF JUSTICE (2020)

Darkly humorous, deadly serious, and led by yet another commanding turn from the great Mads Mikkelsen, Riders of Justice is an absurd and violent saga of vengeance with a surprisingly soft emotional core. Mads Mikkelsen leads a misfit crew of number-crunching nerds in Anders Thomas Jensen’s darkly funny, surprisingly moving revenge comedy.▶ Streaming on Tubi · Read the full review
MISSING LINK (2019)

Though not resting with the top-tier Laika efforts, Missing Link is breathtaking proof about the evils of consolidating style: in the age of selfsame CGI-animation, something this devilishly detailed bears fruit of singularly unique beauty. Kids and adults alike will swoon.▶ Streaming on Tubi · Read the full review
FIRST LOVE (2019)

Takashi Miike appears to be on top of his game, presenting a turducken of a love story in a gangster caper in a daffy crime drama. Giddily violent and stylish, First Love is loaded with attitude, charisma, and character with some fuddy-duddy dialogue limiting it from true greatness.▶ Streaming on Tubi · Read the full review
THIRST STREET (2017)

A hallucinatory psychosexual-thriller/twisted-rom-com Thirst Street will undoubtedly remain one of 2017’s best undiscovered gems. With an ace up his sleeve in star Lindsay Burdge, director Nathan Silver tells this story of unrequited love with splashes of startling comedy, dreamlike imagery and a prevailing sense of dread and watching it is nothing short of a rare treat.▶ Streaming on Tubi · Read the full review
HUNT FOR THE WILDERPEOPLE (2016)

Taika Waititi spreads his wings with Hunt for the Wilderpeople, a genuinely hilarious and emotionally engaging tale of a naughty foster child and his surrogate uncle who venture off into the bush. Sam Neill and Julian Dennison have uncommon comic chemistry in front of the camera while behind it, Waititi shows off some newfound directorial tricks.▶ Streaming on Tubi · Read the full review
SLEEPING WITH OTHER PEOPLE (2015)

Two serial cheaters (Alison Brie and Jason Sudeikis) become best friends and make a pact not to sleep together. Leslye Headland’s rom-com is raunchy, smart, and surprisingly sweet, and its leads have chemistry to burn. It’s the rare rom-com that is genuinely funny and genuinely sexy.▶ Streaming on Tubi · Read the full review
GRANDMA (2015)

Juggling droll comedy with some heavy issues, Grandma is a crowd-pleasing, skillful blend of humor and drama with an absolutely winning performance from Lily Tomlin. Lily Tomlin is a prickly delight as a poet helping her granddaughter scrape together money for an abortion over one long, funny, and moving day.▶ Streaming on Tubi · Read the full review
SCARE ME (2020)

Scare Me milks its juicy premise, two horror storytellers trying to frighten each other on a cold, dark night, for all that it’s worth, proving that less is more when you get the ingredients right and let the rest of the noise fall away. The refreshing performances all pop, particularly when they get nutty.▶ Streaming on Tubi · Read the full review
GLORIA BELL (2019)

Julianne Moore is easy to adore in Sebastián Lelio’s nuanced tale of dating divorcées though Gloria Bell lacks the distinction, and falls short of earning a place among great tales of timeless romance. Julianne Moore gives one of her warmest performances as a divorcée dancing her way through midlife, in Sebastián Lelio’s remake of his own Chilean film.▶ Streaming on Tubi · Read the full review
