Comedy is the genre streaming algorithms do the worst job with: they surface whatever is newest or loudest, and the genuinely funny stuff gets buried. These are the best comedies on Kanopy that I’ve reviewed and still stand behind, led by The Sisters Brothers, Parasite, and Swiss Army Man.
Every pick links to my full review, and the list gets refreshed as titles come and go.

THE SISTERS BROTHERS (2018)

The Sisters Brothers subverts every waking expectation one has for the Western genre, currying favor with rich, strange performances and a bold penchant for charging down the dirtroad less traveled. Poetic, eccentric, and surprisingly heartrending at times, consider this one from Jacques Audiard a flashbang must-see.▶ Streaming on Kanopy · Read the full review
PARASITE (2019)

Like a rival organism depleting its host, Parasite may lay waste to the mind but it nests in the soul, lingering with the viewer long after its conclusion. Bong Joon-ho’s masterful and indefinable parable is a creation of layer upon layer of storytelling skill matched to standout technical prowess across the board. An easy contender for best film of 2019.▶ Streaming on Kanopy · Read the full review
SWISS ARMY MAN (2016)

One of the most bizarre and bizarrely beautiful films to grace the Sundance Dramatic Competition, Swiss Army Man is not a film to be puzzled out in one go but that’s ok. It’s mightily entertaining, features two standout performances and has enough raw originality coursing through its veins to make it truly stand in a league of its own.▶ Streaming on Kanopy · Read the full review
NO OTHER CHOICE (2025)

No Other Choice is an expertly constructed social satire from Park Chan-wook that harkens to its South Korean compatriot Parasite. Come for the bloody thrills, stay for the pertinent message about humanity and their employment crisis circa 2025.▶ Streaming on Kanopy · Read the full review
ANORA (2024)

Mikey Madison rules the screen as a Brooklyn stripper who falls for the wealthy son of a Russian oligarch and the fallout their entanglement entails in the truly alive Anora. As their story unfolds, writer-director Sean Baker puts the romantic-comedy through a fun house mirror, where the promises of love and wealth distort into vapor and illusions, unraveling as the well-drawn characters confront the tricks they’ve played on themselves.▶ Streaming on Kanopy · Read the full review
DINNER IN AMERICA (2022)

Dinner in America is a rough-around-the-edges ode to love on the fringes of society, where a criminal punk rocker and a bizarre loner court an unlikely flirtation, all while navigating the suburbs, musical aspirations and the law. Expect a brash curb-stomp of a coming-of-age saga and prepare for impact.▶ Streaming on Kanopy · Read the full review
ANOMALISA (2015)

Charlie Kaufman finds new ways to stretch the imagination with stop-motion character study Anomalisa. A tender piece on insecurity and the mundanity of human relations, Kaufman’s mind-trip is as thought-provoking as it is tragic and hilarious.▶ Streaming on Kanopy · Read the full review
WEREWOLVES WITHIN (2021)

Josh Ruben continues to make a name for himself in the horror-comedy game with his adaptation of Werewolves Within, which employs a supremely-affable ensemble cast, a goofy premise, and plenty of directorial gags to monstrously-amusing effect. Continue to keep a close eye on this guy, he’s apt to transform into a big-timer one of these lunar rotations.▶ Streaming on Kanopy · Read the full review
RIDERS OF JUSTICE (2020)

Darkly humorous, deadly serious, and led by yet another commanding turn from the great Mads Mikkelsen, Riders of Justice is an absurd and violent saga of vengeance with a surprisingly soft emotional core. Mads Mikkelsen leads a misfit crew of number-crunching nerds in Anders Thomas Jensen’s darkly funny, surprisingly moving revenge comedy.▶ Streaming on Kanopy · Read the full review
MISSING LINK (2019)

Though not resting with the top-tier Laika efforts, Missing Link is breathtaking proof about the evils of consolidating style: in the age of selfsame CGI-animation, something this devilishly detailed bears fruit of singularly unique beauty. Kids and adults alike will swoon.▶ Streaming on Kanopy · Read the full review
FIRST LOVE (2019)

Takashi Miike appears to be on top of his game, presenting a turducken of a love story in a gangster caper in a daffy crime drama. Giddily violent and stylish, First Love is loaded with attitude, charisma, and character with some fuddy-duddy dialogue limiting it from true greatness.▶ Streaming on Kanopy · Read the full review
GREENER GRASS (2019)

Greener Grass uses dream logic and ontological sloppiness to create a singularly bizarro sendup of modern person as social media package. The twisted, random, and bogus plot will alienate viewers expecting traditional comedic stylings but those willing to get weird may just love what Jocelyn DeBoer and Dawn Luebbe have cooked up.▶ Streaming on Kanopy · Read the full review
LOGAN LUCKY (2017)

Ocean’s Eleven by way of Ricky Bobby, Logan Lucky is a splashy, snappy, scrumptious heist flick super-powered by a rambunctious cast and Steven Soderbergh’s poppy direction. While the stacked-up scheming may not entirely add up and there’s more than one woefully underwritten character scurrying around, the sheer nonstop fun of Soderbergh’s rollicking expedition more than qualifies as a worthy comeback.▶ Streaming on Kanopy · Read the full review
INGRID GOES WEST (2017)

Dark, awkward comedy Ingrid Goes West has plenty of uncomfortable laughs and wince-worthy situations but poses potent, pressing commentary about the dark consequences of social media oversharing. Star Aubrey Plaza is heartbreaking and strange as hell as a twisted stalker desperate for friends and attention and any fan of hers ought to seek out this sleeper hit immediately.▶ Streaming on Kanopy · Read the full review
THIRST STREET (2017)

A hallucinatory psychosexual-thriller/twisted-rom-com Thirst Street will undoubtedly remain one of 2017’s best undiscovered gems. With an ace up his sleeve in star Lindsay Burdge, director Nathan Silver tells this story of unrequited love with splashes of startling comedy, dreamlike imagery and a prevailing sense of dread and watching it is nothing short of a rare treat.▶ Streaming on Kanopy · Read the full review
EVERYBODY WANTS SOME!! (2016)

In the pantheon of Richard Linklater’s accomplished filmography, Everybody Wants Some is a relative softball, but even his minor work is essential viewing. A laid-back daydream of primetime golden years that speaks to Linklater’s immutable ability to craft immensely watchable party movies that sparkle with character.▶ Streaming on Kanopy · Read the full review
SLEEPING WITH OTHER PEOPLE (2015)

Two serial cheaters (Alison Brie and Jason Sudeikis) become best friends and make a pact not to sleep together. Leslye Headland’s rom-com is raunchy, smart, and surprisingly sweet, and its leads have chemistry to burn. It’s the rare rom-com that is genuinely funny and genuinely sexy.▶ Streaming on Kanopy · Read the full review
