Horror and comedy have always been closer cousins than either genre likes to admit. Both live and die on timing, both are after a physical reaction, and when a filmmaker nails the blend, a scream turns into a cackle mid-breath. The all-timers are already etched in stone: Evil Dead II, Gremlins, An American Werewolf in London, Re-Animator, Tremors, Dead Alive, and Shaun of the Dead.
This list is about what came after. Since 2010, horror-comedy has gotten weirder, meaner, and even more fun, from meta deconstructions and vampire mockumentaries to murderous robot dolls, Satanic babysitters, and fine dining gone very wrong. These are the modern horror comedies worth your time, pulled from my picks for the best horror of the 2010s and 2020s and presented in no particular order.
HOUSEBOUND (2014)

New Zealand remains the king of horror-comedy, this time presenting a maybe-haunted-house story about a pissy jailbird under house arrest, contending with a possible possession and a definitely annoying mum.▶ Streaming on Prime Video and Tubi · Read the full review
M3GAN (2022)

A roboticist gives her orphaned niece a four-foot AI doll with a protection directive and no supervision. Malicious sentience isn’t fresh; what M3gan does well is approach it with an almost programmatic level of fun.▶ Streaming on Netflix · Read the full review
WHAT WE DO IN THE SHADOWS (2014)

Flight of the Concord funnymen don their vampire garb in this sacrilegious send-up that makes killer use of mockumentary format.Rent or buy on Amazon · Read the full review · Taika Waititi’s Movies, Ranked
BODIES BODIES BODIES (2022)

Hillbilly horror-comedy follows two misunderstood softies trying to relax for the weekend but come up against pretentious college tools who assume the worst. Bloody mishaps ensue.▶ Streaming on Peacock and Tubi

THE CABIN IN THE WOODS (2011)

Joss Whedon and Drew Goddard deconstruct the horror genre in goofy style and changed the game in doing so. Partially responsible for the arthouse horror resurregence. Merman kill FTW.▶ Streaming on HBO Max and AMC+
WEREWOLVES WITHIN (2021)

THE MENU (2022)

A riotous dark satire that uses the upper echelon of the food world to skewer class warfare, with Ralph Fiennes delivering an icy tour-de-force as a mesmerizing, disturbed chef at the end of his rope. Full of twists and full-bellied laughs, consider it a dish that should be consumed immediately.▶ Streaming on Netflix · Read the full review
THE FINAL GIRLS (2015)

Max and her friends are sucked into a slasher film (don’t ask how) and must use their knowledge of horror movies to survive and best their would-be killer. A funny, bloody, sweet meta socks-knocker. (And way better and smarter than similarly meta Happy Death Day.)▶ Streaming on The Roku Channel · Read the full review
LISA FRANKENSTEIN (2024)

A grieving 1989 teen reanimates a Victorian corpse and starts fetching him missing body parts from the people who wronged her. Mostly charming, even as Diablo Cody cribs from a familiar deck.▶ Streaming on Peacock
CHEAP THRILLS (2013)
