First Poster for CAPTAIN AMERICA: WINTER SOLDIER

With just a few weeks left before Thor: The Dark World hits theaters, Marvel Studios is starting to “ramp” up marketing for their next big tentpole feature, Captain America: The Winter Soldier. Now that it’s no longer the 1940s and Cap has been transplanted to the day of skinny jeans and pea coats, his whole getup seems a little more ridiculous but, hey, it is a superhero movie after all. Following the events of The Avengers, The Winter Soldier features Chris Evans as Captain America settling in to a new era while working closely with S.H.I.E.L.D., the shadowy organization lead by Samuel L. Jackson‘s Nick Fury. Although Thor will probably get away with not addressing the continuity issues presented by the new Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. television show, the whole “Coulson lives” predicament is something that will surely need to be addressed in this next Marvel installment.

In this first sequel to Captain America, Sebastain Stan returns to play the main foil of the film – the titular Winter Soldier. You’ll remember that in the first installment, Stan played Buckie, Steve Roger’s best friend who presumably died falling off a train in the aftermath of a fight with Red Skull’s croonies. According to comic book lore, Buck survives the fall, is frozen in time (seems to be a trend with these 1940s guys) and is brainwashed and trained to become a supervillain.

Joining the cast, Anthony Mackie will add another super to the roster as The Falcon, a birdlike sidekick to Cap. Robert Redford also steps in as Alexander Pierce, a sleeper agent for S.H.I.E.L.D. Scarlett Johansson, Cobie Smoulders, Sam Jackson, Dominic Cooper, and Toby Jones all return. Look for the first trailer here in two days.

Captain America: The Winter Solider is directed by Anthony and Joe Russo and stars Chris Evans, Frank Grillo, Sebastian Stan, Scarlett Johansson, Anthony Mackie, Samuel L. Jackson, Robert Redford, Cobie Smoulders, Emily VanCamp, Dominic Cooper, and Toby Jones. It hits theaters on April 4, 2014.

Scorsese's THE WOLF OF WALL STREET Pushed to Christmas Release

The writing was on the wall for a late stage move for The Wolf of Wall Street. Now we can rejoice that it didn’t get pushed any further than Christmas Day, leaving it as an 2014 Oscar contender. Not on track to hit the original release date of November 15, a fast approaching, now open slot, Scorsese’s latest apparently needed quite a trim, as the original cut ran over three hours and needed to lose quite a lump of those minutes for profit-seeking reasons. This month-plus push really only gives Scorsese a few more weeks to cut because it will still lead the Marrakech International Film Festival on November 29.

A push of this nature into a massively crowded release period may mean some shuffling as Paramount is also scheduled to release Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit on that same day. Although typically a loaded release date, this Christmas will sees the release of The Secret Life of Walter Mitty, 47 Ronin, Believe, Grudge Match, August: Osage County, and the limited releases of Labor Day and The Invisible Woman. With seven films now looking to open wide on the same day, just you wait for an official announcement that Jack Ryan won’t see the light of day until January.

The Wolf of Wall Street is directed by Martin Scorsese and stars Leonardo Dicaprio, Jonah Hill, Matthew McConaughey,  Jon Bernthal, Jon Favreau, Kyle Chandler, Jean Dujardin, Rob Reiner and Spike Jonze. It hits theaters November 15.

Bruce Campbell Confirms He'll Reprise Ash in ARMY OF DARKNESS 2

Good news, fans of the Evil Dead series, especially the 2013 remake of the original Evil Dead: Bruce Campbell has confirmed he will return as Ash in the upcoming sequel to Army of Darkness. The director of the original series Sam Raimi has had a slower schedule since directing Oz the Great and Powerful and producing the Evil Dead remake, reportedly due to writing the sequel to the Army of Darkness, the 1992 spin off of the Evil Dead series. Potentially drawing on the teaser at the end of the credits of 2013’s Evil Dead, this may hint at a melding of the two timelines for a crossover film coming later.  

55-year-old Campbell has played Ash Williams, the original hero of the Evil Dead series voted the “24th Greatest Movie Character of All Time” by Empire Magazine, in 4 films not including the upcoming Army of Darkness sequel. Speaking at Wizard World Nashville Comic Con, Campbell spoke on the role the possibilities of him reprising it given the time that has passed: “The last one was twenty-two years ago. I just haven’t been racing to do it. Sam Raimi is just a little bit busy making the biggest movies in Hollywood. I used to be busy. Now I’m not. That’s why I’m here. Ash would have to stop occasionally from chasing some deadite to catch his breath. Maybe we could do that, I guess. That would be exciting. Fight in a walker. That would be all right. Hit them with my cane. Fake them out, have a fake heart attack, distract a zombie. I like it…[Seriously] All right, sir, the answer is yes.”

Amusingly enough, this story has yet to be  confirmed by Campbell himself.  Rumors for the sequel have circulated since March, and the teaser at the end of the Evil Dead  remake has primed the pump for a triumphant return to the role, no matter how long the role might end up being. No release date has been given for the sequel – it’s in 2016 – and no word has been given as to who else will be cast or whether Raimi or Fede Alvarez, the most recent Evil Dead’s director, will helm the Army of Darkness remake.  However, as the Rumor wheel spins up and Raimi finishes writing the script, more information about Campbell’s involvement, other casting, and the overall production will come to the service. In either case, it’ll be a long three years.

Four New Marvel TV Shows in the Works

When people look back on this era of entertainment, they will wonder why we are so obsessed with super heroes. As if two Marvel movies a year weren’t enough, the superhero studio is working on four new shows and a miniseries, to accompany their recent show Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.

According to Deadline, the shows are in the very early stages of development, as they are still looking for a network to take a 60 show deal. Ambitious as this goal is, it could be an enticing offer for struggling networks. Potential networks are Netflix, Amazon, and WGN America.

Anything with Marvel’s name on it tends to be a sure thing, these days, so confirmation of these rumors should be out shortly. Marvel’s unrelenting march towards global domination shows no sign of slowing down.

Joseph Gordon-Levitt Denies ANT-MAN Rumors, Paul Rudd Now Uncontested

Despite many internet rumors that the contenders for the titular role in Edgar Wright’s Marvel picture Ant-Man were Paul Rudd and Joseph Gordon-Levitt, JGL has decried the news as “internet rumors” and although not directly denying the possibility, interviews at NY Comic-Con and for his recent movie Don Jon have him effectively denying his involvement in any way. This goes against Variety’s reporting that both actors had met with Marvel execs about the role, and although his de facto withdrawal seems to indicate that Rudd will take the role, the casting hasn’t yet occurred and some sources say other actors are in consideration for the role.

One of the least popularly followed Marvel superheroes, Ant-Man follows biochemist Dr. Hank Pym as he discovers a size-altering formula and the subsequent troubles and action when testing the formula on himself goes awry. Wright, who previously directed the Shaun of the Dead trilogy of films along with Scott Pilgrim vs. the World, is working with former collaborator Joe Cornish to adapt the comics originally penned by Jack Kirby, Stan Lee, and Larry Lieber into a Marvel origin story in typical super-hero movie fashion.

Given Wright’s predilection for comedy in filmmaking, it will be interesting to see if this super hero film incorporates that sensibility without loosing the comic book tradition and aesthetic that most super hero films depend on. Kevin Feige of Iron Man, X-Men, and The Avengers, will also produce, which bodes well for the film’s look and feel.

Although many online pundits and comic book aficionados openly preferred Rudd from the start for the role, others put enough weight behind JGL for this dropout to be somewhat of a disappointment. The release date is set to be July 31st, 2015, so very few details are available on what to expect from the film and its casting in general. It lands among a list of dozens of superhero films and TV projects planned for the next couple years for Marvel and DC both, meaning that comic book fans will get to see most if not all their favorite comic book heroes turned into movies before Marvel and DC have to start either making more original comics or start making remakes.

Charlie Hunnam Leaves FIFTY SHADES OF GREY Movie, Shortlist Speculation Ensues

Charlie Hunnam, known by many as Jax Teller on FX’s Sons of Anarchy, has dropped out of film adaptation of 50 Shades of Grey. Hunnam, who was slated to play the titular BDSM-enthusiast and CEO Christian Grey, has dropped out officially because of his “immersive TV schedule which is not allowing him time to adequately prepare for the role” according to a statement issued by Universal. Several celebrity gossip blogs are reporting that his dropping out had deeper causes, including the unconfirmed notion one anonymous source gave that “he was feeling like it would be his version of Showgirls and he didn’t want to be remembered for that” as reported by hollywoodlife.com. Dakota Johnson (21 Jump Street, The Social Network) will still star as the film’s heroine, Anastasia Steele.

His personal reluctance, if the rumors are to be believed, is understandable given the high public profile that E.L James’s Fifty Shades trilogy has enjoyed since the first book’s release in 2011 and since the movie adaptation was announced in March of 2012. The trilogy chronicles the every-woman college student Anastasia Steele’s kinky relationship with wealthy Christian Grey as it deepens and convolutes over the three-book cycle.

The trilogy is often labeled as “mommy porn” for its graphic and nearly constant BDSM scenes, a legacy that has prompted much speculation on how the movie adaptation will depict the two protagonists’ relationship and the near-constant stream of smut that engulfs it. Following Hunnam’s departure, fan activism focused on what actor will replace Hunnam in that role has given way to a potential shortlist from Universal for the character.

The list, released by The Hollywood Reporter, includes Alexander Skarsgard (True Blood), Jamie Dornan (Marie Antionette, The Fall), Theo James (Golden Boy), and Christian Cooke (Magic City) as potential replacements for Hunnan. Garrett Hedlund (Tron: Legacy, On the Road), who had apparently received an informal offer during the initial round of casting is unavailable to play the role due to his participation in Unbroken, Angelina Jolie’s film about Olympic runner Louis Zamperini’s imprisonment by Japanese forces during World War II. A fan petition seeking to instate Matt Bomer (White Collar) as Grey and Alexis Bledel as Steele has reached 88,650 signatures on change.org, but it is unconfirmed whether Bomer at least is officially in the running.

Not many comments have been made about how great all of this casting intrigue will be for promoting the Fifty Shades movie, and given that most reports take as given that the next two “Fifty Shades“ books will also have movie adaptations, whoever takes the role will no doubt return for the other two and will have the trilogy as one of the hallmarks of his career. The film is still set to be released on August 1st of 2014, which means that new developments on the casting will be coming quickly if the studio wants to keep the film on track for production.

First Poster for Wes Anderson's THE GRAND BUDAPEST HOTEL

As an obsessive Wes Anderson fan, I relish in any piece of his inspired artwork, so while most posters don’t really get me excited, this one for The Grand Budapest Hotel does for all of its Wes Anderson-esque goodness. While I rather enjoyed his last film, Moonrise Kingdom, it was hardly one of my favorite of his and I’m excited to see Anderson return to the adult world. As always, he’s got a cast and crew to be oogled with season Anderson loyalites Bill Murray, Owen Wilson, Willem Dafoe, Tilda Swinton, Edward Norton and Adrien Brody will join Ralph Fiennes, Harvey Keitel, Jude Law, Saoirse Ronan, Mathieu Amalric, Lea Seydoux, F. Murray Abraham, Tom Wilkinson, and newcomer Tony Revolori.

Although little is known about the film, the plot description per IMDB details:

“A famous hotel’s legendary concierge strikes up a friendship with a young employee who becomes his trusted protégé.”

For me, Anderson’s best films come from with exploring themes of wounded humanity. Films like Rushmore, The Royal Tenenbaums, and The Darjeeling Limited are as deeply tragic as they are comedic and I’m hoping for something of the same from his latest without quite as much snarky childhood wist as his last two, The Fantastic Mr. Fox and Moonrise Kingdom.

With this first poster debut, we can hopefully expect a full synposis or trailer in the near future.

Harrison Ford Talks Potential Role in BLADE RUNNER Sequel

In an interview with IGN, Harrison Ford has confirmed that he and Ridley Scott have been in preliminary talks around an as-of-yet unnamed sequel to Blade Runner, a much anticipated follow up to the 80’s cult-classic. Ford, who has been a household name since George Lucas’s wildly popular Star Wars films, originally played the lead in Blade Runner as Rick Deckard, jaded hunter of an fugitive androids known as replicants in the gritty and high-tech future of the movie.

Given that the book the original film was based off of, Phillip K. Dick’s “Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?“, has several sequels with the second happening only months after the first, it is unclear whether or not this sequel will have Ford reprising his role. Further, the official silence and thus rumor surrounding the sequel make it difficult to conclude what this interview could mean.

Ford revealed that he had Ridley had been “chatting about it” when asked whether or not he would reprise his role, but when pressed about his sometimes acrimonious relationship to the first Blade Runner, he responded, “Everybody has an ambition when they come into a film and that everyone’s ambition may not be so focused on the same thing. I truly admire Ridley as a man and as a director and I would be very happy to engage again with him [in] the further telling of this story.” 

A script for the project is currently being written by Michael Green, who wrote the screenplay for 2011’s Green Lantern along with scripts for TV series like Heroes, Everwood, and Smallville, along withHampton Fancher, the writer of the screenplay for the original Blade Runner. Previous details to emerge are that this sequel will probably take place years after the original and feature a female protagonist, although nothing will be certain until the screenplay is finished.

Scott, who will follow upcoming film The Counselor debuts will religious drama Exodus and potentially a Prometheus sequel on his plate before he starts work on the Blade Runner sequel, has confirmed none-the-less that the sequel will be coming up in the future: “It is happening.” About his talks with Ford, he remarked, “With Harrison Ford? I don’t know yet. Is he too old? Well, he was a ‘Nexus-6’ so we don’t know how long he can live.”  Given Scott and Ford’s production schedules and the dearth of much more information regarding Ford’s likelihood of being cast, or any of the other potential casting decisions for that matter, the rumor mill will no doubt keep turning for a while to come before more tangible information about this production is released.

Oliver Stone Denounces BREAKING BAD Finale and Makes Himself Sound like an Idiot

Oliver Stone, former auteur responsible for Platoon and, of late, political hack responsible for Alexander, World Trade Center, W., Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps and Savages , felt that he needed to speak up against the much-heralded final episode of Breaking Bad. Now taken out of context, Stone’s accusations of unrealistic, aggrandizing violence may have some credence but he admits to not “watch[ing] the show very tune” and that he “tune[d] in and saw…15 minutes”. That’s like sporadically tuning in and out of The Sopranos for six seasons and catching the last scene and calling it a masterpiece. In short, it makes the commenter sound uneducated and, well, like a bit of an idiot.

Not only does Stone’s denouncement of Breaking Bad hint at a touch of jealousy (creator Vince Gilligan’s star is on the rise as Stone’s career has been plummeting for years) but it’s very much a case of the pot calling the kettle black. 1994’s Natural Born Killers is one of the most sadistic and twisted films I’ve ever seen and in no way is less aggrandizing of violence than Breaking Bad. In a lot of ways, Stone’s comment kind of sounds like the desperate plea of an aged talent who wants to make his way back into the public eye, even if it is for these type of misinformed comments.

Take into account that the following quotation from Stone contains major spoilers for the finale of Breaking Bad so only read on if you’ve finished the series:

“There’s too much violence in our movies – and it’s all unreal to me. I don’t know if you saw the denouncement [of ‘Breaking Bad’], I happen to not watch the series very much, but I happened to tune in and I saw the most ridiculous 15 minutes of a movie – it would be laughed off the screen. Nobody could park his car right then and there and could have a machine gun that could go off perfectly and kill all of the bad guys! It would be a joke.

“It’s only in the movies that you find this kind of fantasy violence. And that’s infected the American culture; you young people believe all of this sh*t! Batman and Superman, you’ve lost your minds, and you don ‘t even know it! At least respect violence. I’m not saying don’t show violence, but show it with authenticity…

“If people think that bringing a machine gun to your last meeting is a solution to a television series that’s very popular, I think they’re insane. Something’s wrong. It’s not the world we know.”

It seems that ol’ Mr. Stone is suffering a bit of late-term amnesia, forgetting about the violent films that made his career what it is today. Honestly, I think that starting an intelligent debate about violence in pop culture is all well and good but to do it from an uninformed standpoint is a major waste of words. My words to Stone: Go back, watch the series in its entirety, and then make some public comments.
