Worst Case Scenario Casting for STAR WARS VII

Zanakin
“The horror…the horror.

According to recent reports, Zac Efron has (maybe-potentially-hopefully-not) been in discussions with Director J.J. Abrams regarding potential casting in Star Wars: Episode VII. This, following earlier news this week that Adam Driver is set to portray a Sith Lord in the newest Disney-sponsored saga. For anyone who’s seen Efron’s work—most recently That Awkward Moment, quite possibly the year’s worst film to date—this could spell disaster for the film, which already seems like it’s on a galactic crash course. At least this isn’t the worst possible casting, as it certainly could be worse. Here are some actors we definitely don’t want to see anywhere near this trilogy.

1. Kevin Hart

Kevin Hart Yoda

With Abrams’ reboot, there certainly will be creatures of all shapes and sizes floating through hyperspace. Let’s hope Kevin Hart, nuisance personified, isn’t one of them. He’s everywhere these days. He’s like the force, a constant presence you don’t see but definitely feel; you couldn’t escape him if you tried. Whether it’s terrible movies (recent examples: Ride Along, Grudge Match, and Think Like a Man), the NBA All-Star Celebrities’ Game, or all over BET, KHart has burned himself into the intergalactic rolodex. Though it would be funny to see him bouncing around with a lightsaber, this shouldn’t happen in any dimension.

2. Adam Sandler

Adam Solo

Adam Sandler hasn’t made anything worthwile since 2002, and pretty much everything he touches turns to space junk. It would help if he were still funny, but that Sandler is in a galaxy far far way. Just imagine Sandler trying to fly the Millenium Falcon. And really, how many roles would he play? It’d be great to see him play Chewbacca, Han Solo, Leia and Luke simultaneously. We beg you, Adam Solo, stay away.

3. John Travolta

Chancellor Travlotine

Is it wrong that I think it would be aweseome if John Travolta was brought into the Star Wars galaxy? How many names would he mispronounce? So much intentional comedy would ensue with Travolta trying to pronounce “midichlorians” (mardiacloritis) and “Dagobah” (Deborawr). Okay, maybe this one should happen. Get on it Abrams, you’re our only hope!

It remains to be seen how the rest of the cast will be filled out as production starts in April. With Star Wars: The Clone Wars Season 6 set to release Friday, and all the castings sure to come out in the next month, this is sure to be a force-filled March. As Travolta would say: Mary the frost be wart yew.

FANTASTIC FOUR Reboot Casts Four Rising Stars

Fantastic_4_Casting.jpg
Castings for the upcoming 2015 FOX-produced reboot Fantastic Four were released Friday last week and look very promising. Michael B. Jordan and Miles Teller are teaming up again after their recent collaboration in Tom Gormican‘s misogynistic mess That Awkward MomentFortunately for Fantastic Four fans and moviegoers alike, Teller and Jordan were just hyper-talented victims of Gormican’s hyper-awful script.

Joining them are Kate Mara (127 Hours) and British actor Jamie Bell (Billy ElliotJane Eyre). This reboot also represents a reunion for Jordan, Mara and director Josh Trank, who worked together on 2010 UK success Chronicle

Jordan, who has been burning his way into the public eye as of late, will play “The Human Torch” while Teller will have to flex his acting muscles as the elastic “Mr. Fantastic.” Bell will do a lot of CGI work as “The Thing,” and it remains to be seen how his plié and coup-de-pied work  in Billy Elliot will carry over in his portrayal of the orange rock-man. Mara, the oldest main casting at 30 years old, will try not to be too invisible as “Sue Storm.”

This latest announcement comes on the heels of Marvel’s first trailer release for Guardians of the Galaxy last week, as Marvel is loading their plate for the upcoming year. The Fantastic Four‘s cast of young actors represents a much different direction and tone for the series than the original Jessica Alba and Chris Evans-led F4 series. The cast is notably younger than the 2005 cast, continuing Marvel’s recent trend in shifting to a youthful, less serious, more dynamic culture, as seen in recent reboots like The Amazing Spiderman and X-Men: First Class or in more unconventional billings like the aforementioned Guardians of the Galaxy.

Things are looking good for the comic world and 2015 looks to be action-packed with Age of UltronAnt-Man and now The Fantastic Four all billed for release.

ANT-MAN Finds Another Ant-Man in Michael Douglas

ant-man_DOuglas.jpg

After Marvel’s Phase Two, which started with Iron Man 3 and Thor: The Dark World and will continue with Captain America: The Winter Soldier and Guardians of the Galaxy, concludes with Joss Whedon‘s The Avengers 2, the next comic book movie from Marvel universe is Edgar Wright‘s long gestated Ant-Man, a tale about a scientist who creates a suit that allows him to shrink down and communicate with, and subsequently control, ants. Silly though it may seem, with these ant-like powers, Ant-man fights crime on a big scale. Funnyman Paul Rudd was cast as Ant-Man last month and many assumed that Rudd would play the original version of the superhero, Hank Pym. Those assumptions were incorrect.

As it turns out, Rudd was actually cast as the second generation Ant-Man, a Marvel mainstay by the name of Scott Lang. According to Marvel lore, Lang is a thief who steals the original Ant-Man’s technology from Pym, unintentionally burdening himself with the power and responsibility of a super. Today brought news that while Rudd would not play the original version of the character, Michael Douglas would. Obviously, this timeline will see Douglas stepping in as a more veteran version of Pym. This shift makes sense considering Rudd fits the description of a jovial thief more so than he does a serious scientist like the Hank Pym of the comics.

In the comic series, Pym plays an important and essential role in creation of The Avengers. While he was obviously omitted from the creation mythology in the Marvel Movie Universe, Pym will now get to at least have some place in the MMU Marvel films have created. Also notable, Pym was responsible for the creation of Ultron, the bio-mechanical villain from which the second Avengers movie takes its name. Whether or not Douglas will play any role in The Avengers 2 is unknown but somewhat unlikely.

By casting the venerable, well regarded, and, not to mention expensive, Douglas as Pym alongside Rudd as Lang, Marvel has proved that they are willing to continue to shell out for top-shelf talent that comes with name-brand recognition. But even more interesting than Douglas or Rudd is director Edgar Wright‘s involvement, who will likely bring his high-art blend of comedy and action, a common ingredient to the Marvel world. As far as expectations, juxtaposing the snarky Rudd with the gravitas of Douglas could create a potentially excellent repartee and sets this one up to be one of the most interesting combinations out of Marvel’s gates.

Paul Rudd Is ANT-MAN

Antman.jpg
One of the lesser known Marvel heroes is shaping up to have the most exciting movie, with Edgar Wright directing and Joe Cornish writing Ant-Man. These two’s already incredible chemistry will now be enhanced by Paul Rudd, who has reportedly taken up the title role. The distinction between good and bad superhero movies tends to be what happens when action is not on the screen. This is why Iron Man was so successful. Everyone involved in Ant-Man are people that understand this, so some optimism for this project is definitely warranted.

Marvel is aiming for a July 31, 2015 release, pitting it against Marvel’s own The Avengers: Age of Ultron and Zack Snyder’s Batman vs. Superman. Since they are not aiming to rush it out, so Ant-Man can appear in the new Avengers, we will probably have to wait a few more years to see Rudd appear alongside Robert Downy Jr., Chris Evans, Mark Ruffalo, Chris Hemsworth, and friends, in an inevitable third Avengers installment. Either way, the summer of 2015 is looking to be pretty stacked, when it comes to superhero blockbusters, but Ant-Man certainly has all the ingredients (besides a more popular superhero) to lead the pack.

Emilia Clarke Joins TERMINATOR Reboot

Emilia-Clarke.jpg
Emilia Clarke of HBO’s Game of Thrones has been tapped to join the cast of the new Terminator reboot as franchise mainstay Sarah Conner. Helming the project will be GoT alum and Thor: The Dark World director Alan Taylor. Other casting rumors include Zero Dark Thirty’s Jason Clarke as John Connor and, of course, Arnold Schwarzenegger, who seems to do just about anything these days. Will she will play the naïve Sarah Conner of the original or carry some of the tough-as-nails insanity of Linda Hamilton in the sequel? Either way, versatility will be the key to a solid performance by Clarke.

But the concept of a reboot that has the original star (Schwarzenegger) is a little unnerving. It shows that the higher ups on this project are unwilling to take a big enough risk in order to distance this from the original franchise. Terminator has quite frankly been beaten to death, especially with the sequels at the box office, but still: the originals hold up incredibly well. This reboot will have to rely on the curiosity of an audience that still isn’t quite over the novelty of Schwarzenegger’s return to acting.

When the story tries to explain why they chose to use such an old, clearly past his prime, man as a blueprint for their mega death robot, eyes may roll.

Gal Gadot to Play First Big Screen Wonder Woman

Gal_Gadot.jpg

Zack Snyder’s much speculated on new film, Batman vs. Superman, released a non-Ben Affleck related news item today: Gal Gadot will be playing Wonder Woman. The internet responded with a collective, “Who’s Gal Gadot?” Speculation on her ability to carry the role has been expectantly absent, as she only has five film credits to her name, three of which have the words “Fast” and “Furious” in the title.

What does it say about the target audience for these films, when Ben Affleck’s announcement to play one of the most iconic vigilantes of all time is met with uproarious disapproval, but when an actress is announced for an iconic role, our only criteria is her hotness? Snyder gave his take on her, “Not only is Gal an amazing actress, but she also has that magical quality that makes her perfect for the role.” A magical quality? Spot on analysis, Zack.

I, for one, am glad they went with a more unproven actress. It should be exciting to see what other heroes are announced for the film, as this is quickly turning into the Justice League film that has been long anticipated. Plus, it’ll be the first time that one of DC’s most iconic superheroes will grace the screen – unless you count the x-rated 1979 spinoff, Superwoman, which starred Jesie James and has been called “a comedy porn classic.” Hopefully this will be a more, ahem, forward looking debut for Wonderwoman.

HORRIBLE BOSSES 2 Nabs Chris Pine and Christoph Waltz

horriblebosses-atill.jpg

Is Hollywood so unimaginative that it has to rehash an idea as simple as Horrible Bosses? Even after lackluster numbers, it appears that the 2011 comedy will attempt to flower into a franchise after all.  Confirmed to play a new horrible boss/father-son duo are Chris Pine and Christoph Waltz. Jason Bateman, Charlie Day, and Jason Sudeikis will reprise their roles as the extremely unlucky guys who just can’t seem to find a good boss, a feat proven tricky when you’ve attempted to murder your last bosses.

What else is there to say about Christoph Waltz? He can do no wrong. One can imagine that he is swimming in scripts for better movies than this, so it must be okay. Right? Chris Pine has also proven to be pretty solid talent lately and it will be interesting to see how he handles a comedic role. The few comedic moments in the new Star Trek films were well executed by him.

Hopefully they don’t go the route taken by Hangover 2 and do the exact plot again. However, it’s difficult to imagine a much broader scope when the film is called Horrible Bosses. You pretty much know what you are in for.

I am currently working on the third film in the series, where the protagonists work in a Chinese factory and commit suicide after 2 hours of existential pondering and hopelessness. At least that’d be something new.

Horrible Bosses 2 is directed by Sean Anders and stars Jason Bateman, Jason Sudeikis, Charlie Day, Chris Pine and Christoph Waltz. It hits theaters on November 28, 2014.

Aaron Taylor-Johnson Confirmed for THE AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON

NEx6T6WGgLolAG_1_2.jpg

The longtime rumors of Kick-Ass lead Aaron Johnson’s playing Quicksilver in The Avengers: Age of Ultron have been confirmed. For those of you who aren’t completely well versed in your Marvel heroes, Quicksilver is Magneto’s son and sports some super speed, akin to DC’s The Flash (please don’t murder me for comparing them, nerds). Elizabeth Olsen was confirmed to play his sister Scarlet Witch by Samuel Jackson, a while back.

In an ironic twist of fate, Johnson’s Kick-Ass co-star Evan Peters will be playing Quicksilver in the other giant super hero party X-Men: Days of Future Past. Supposedly the conflicting reports on Johnson’s involvement had to do with potential scheduling conflicts with the new Godzilla film. It is exciting to see Marvel take on some of the more fringe superheroes, as Thor, The Hulk, and even Iron Man are starting to wear thing after so many years. See if Kick-Ass kicks ass as a real superhero, when The Avengers: Age of Ultron is released May 1st, 2015.

The Avengers: Age of Ultron is directed by Joss Whedon and stars Robert Downey Jr., Scarlett Johansson, Chris Hemsworth, James Spader, Chris Evans, Jeremy Renner, Elizabeth Olson, Samuel L. Jackson, Mark Ruffalo, Anthony Mackie, and Aaron Taylor-Johnson. It hits theaters on May 1st, 2015.

Emile Hirsch Cast in John BELUSHI Biopic

Emile-Hirsch-John-Belushi.jpg
According to the Hollywood Reporter, Emile Hirsch has been cast as comedy legend John Belushi, in the Steve Conrad directed biopic simply named Belushi. Conrad’s film will follow the heights reached by Belushi’s comedic genius, as well as his self-induced downfall and eventual death at the hands of drugs and alcohol.

Hirsch undoubtedly has some ridiculously large shoes to fill. Considering the relative recency of Belushi’s body of work, easy access to his “Greatest Hits Clips” could render any missteps in portrayal by Hirsch as a fodder for tough critics. However, John Belushi’s friend and SNL co-star, Dan Aykroyd will serve as the film’s executive producer, which may alleviate audience’s worries at some extent or perhaps usher in a different set of uneasy feelings. Hopefully, we can expect an honest attempt from Aykroyd to tribute his dear friend on the silver screen, rather than another “the time is ripe” cash grab. Jim Carrey proved a similar feat possible with his portrayal of comic legend Andy Kaufman in Man on the Moon. Perhaps Hirsch should give him a call. Filming is set to start in New York early next year.

Tom Hardy to Play Elton John in ROCKETMAN

Desktop8.jpg
It seems that these days everyone just has to have their own biopic. Apparently, there’s not even a need to wait until they passed away anymore as Tom Hardy has just been secured to play world famous pianist and pop sensation Elton John in Rocketman. Known more for playing brutish lunks like Bronson, Bane, and Tommy from Warrior, a gay pop singer is quite a departure from the norm for Hardy. However unexpected the casting, it’s surely an interesting choice for a performer on the brink of the A-list.

To be directed by Michael Gracey, who will see his directorial debut with The Greatest Showman on Earth starring Hugh Jackman, Rocketman will track John’s life story from childhood to his ecliptic rise to stardom. With a script from Lee Hall (Billy Elliot, War Horse) the film surely stands a chance of being a full-blown cheese factory but it’s too early to pass too much judgement. Hardy’s involvement at this point is a silver lining for a project that would otherwise sound fairly dull.

Per the official press release: Much like the man himself, Rocketman is a larger-than-life movie musical spectacle that tells the story of a child prodigy turned music legend.  Elton will re-record many of his iconic hits to parallel the emotional beats of the film that will have audiences on their feet, singing along to his much loved music.  The film is scheduled to shoot in fall 2014.

As for what Rocket Picture CEO Steve Hamilton Shaw had to say about bringing Hardy on, he added the following:

“Tom is a stellar talent who will add extraordinary depth and nuance in bringing Elton’s story to life. We are excited to have such a gifted actor on board, and equally excited to be in the hands of Peter Schlessel and the entire Focus Features team. Tom is quickly becoming known as one of the world’s most versatile actors, and like others at the top of their craft, he has proven his ability to transform himself completely into the character or subject found in the material. We are confident that Tom will embody the physicality and spirit of Sir Elton.  This, in conjunction with the creative team led by Michael and Rocket Pictures, will provide the foundation for something that will be a unique cinematic event.”
