BLUE IS THE WARMEST COLOR Wins the Palme d'Or at Cannes

The 2013 Cannes Film Festival has now come to a close with the more desired Palme d’Or headed to the hands of Abdellatif Kechiche for Blue is the Warmest Color. Although this is one of the few films that I didn’t really have on my radar, apparently it got a lot of buzz from those at Cannes. Following the footsteps of a young, traditional girl who realizes that she has feelings for an older woman, this film got lots of buzz for its ultra-realistic 10-minute girl-on-girl sex scene.

Outside of that big first place prize, Joel and Ethan Coen won the Grand Prix for Inside Llewyn Davis, Amat Escalante won Best Director for Heli and Kore-Eda Hirokazu‘s Soshite Chichi Ni Naru (Like Father, Like Son) won the Jury Prize.

On the acting side of the equation, Bruce Dern took home Best Actor for his role in Alexander Payne‘s Nebraska and Berenice Bejo won Best Actress for The Past.

Perhaps the worst news to come out of Cannes is that Nicholas Winding Refn‘s Only God Forgives, which was one of my most anticipated films of the year, got booed at its premiere for being overly-violent and overly-artsy. Damn shame.

DEXTER Comes to an End with Season 8 Trailer

http://nowhitenoise.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/07/Dexter-1.jpg
For those of us who’ve followed the journey of Dexter Morgan, the light at the end of the tunnel is finally visible as this will be the last go around with our favorite serial killer. Dexter has had quite a bit of up and down with a stellar first, third and fourth season, a middling second season, a lukewarm sixth and seventh season and a god-awful Julia Stiles-ridden fifth season.

Hopefully these final moments spend with Michael C. Hall‘s Mr. Morgan will wrap up the series in a satisfactory way. Whether that means the death of Dexter or his finally being captured and tried for his many crimes, we cannot say.

Check out the trailer here:

Nolan, Chris Nolan To Take on James Bond?

Before you get your hopes up and start having a nerdgasm, remember that this is only a rumor zooming its way around the internet and gaining traction but it’s still a rumor worth reporting on because if this actually were to happen, it would be pretty, pretty, pretty good. So on to the actual word on the street: Christopher Nolan (The Dark Knight, Inception) is said to be in informal talks to direct Bond 24.

Now, obviously news like this is to be taken with a grain of salt but you have to take into accountant the fact that Nolan has expressed interest in directing a Bond film before. His latest comment that “It would have to be the right situation and the right time in their cycle of things” though seems to discredit any suggestion that he would be stepping into direct Bond 24. His specific reference to the “right time in their cycle” seems to suggest that he would want to step in and do the first film in a new iteration of Bond rather than close out this latest generation that started with 2006’s Casino Royale.

Not only would Nolan be less likely to pick up the Daniel Craig-led franchise, considering it’s on its hind legs and primed for a more sturdy follow-up to Skyfall than a completely original vision, but he’s also got his hands very much full with Interstellar which has yet to even start filming.

Unless MGM wanted to push Bond 24 back to a late 2015 release date, it’s very unlikely that Nolan would even have the time to begin pre-production let alone film the thing. But both parties are probably very well aware of these scheduling conflicts, leading me to assume that these early negotiations are more likely revolving around the relaunch of Bond after Craig fills the mantle one last time with Bond 24.

For the time being, I think we can expect MGM and Co. to push forward on Bond 24 without Nolan, keeping him in their back pocket for the inevitable Bond 25.

JURASSIC PARK 4 Production Halted But Is it Extinct Just Yet?

It may be longer yet until we see malevolent dinosaurs roam Isla Nubla again as production on Jurassic Park 4 has been shut down indefinitely. Yesterday, Digital Asset Manager Todd Smoyer and Concept Artist Dean Sherriff both took to Twitter to get the news out that Universal has stopped the JP train in its tracks with Smoyer going all drama queen and claiming,

“Hollywood makes and crushes dreams. Goodbye JP4.”

On the heels of these comments and the internet blowing up, Universal stepped forward and tried to reassure fans that while JP4 would no longer be hitting theaters in June 2014, it would still be waiting in the wings.

“In coordination with filmmakers, Universal has decided to release Jurassic Park 4 at a later date giving the studio and filmmakers adequate time to bring audiences the best possible version of the fourth installment in Universal’s beloved franchise. We could not be more excited about the vision that Colin Trevorrow has created for this film, and we look forward to watching as he and the producers create another great chapter in this franchise’s storied history.”

Although Universal seems to remaining optimistic, it’s likely that they are just trying to calm the storm for now. While pushing back the release date in order to give the special effects crew more time to work through this very FX driven film would seem like a reasonable move on the studios part, pulling the plug on the production entirely is never good news.

With Steven Spielberg producing and Colin Trevorrow (Safety Not Guaranteed) directing, JP4 was expected to take the franchise back to its roots and see the state of the island from the first film some-odd years later. Like the fate of the triceratops from the original Jurassic Park, this potentially promising production is now in the hands of something greater. At this point, we will see if that vision is ever realized.

Pixar Takes on Marvel For BIG HERO 6

A long time ago a picture made the internet rounds that showed Iron Man done Pixar style and got everyone talking about the possibility of Marvel and Pixar merging for a film under the auspices of parent corporation Disney. Well now it looks like that possibility is a reality as Pixar Studios will tackle Big Hero 6, based on the Marvel comic of the same name.

Big Hero 6 takes place in the fiction city of San Fransokyo and follows the exploits of Hiro Hamada, a robotics engineer who gets caught up in a battle against a band of baddies on a destruction path to take down the city.

The original Marvel comic squad appeared for the first time in September of 1998 so they are a relatively new addition to the Marvel canon. Included in the superhero group of the comics is Silver Samurai, Sunfire, GoGo Tomago, Honey Lemon, Hiro Takachiho, Baymax, Ebon Samurai, Sunprye, Wasabi-No-Ginger and Fred. Thus far, the only cross over appears to be the titular Hiro but with no cast yet announced, this film will be sure to add in the slew of heroes.

Take a peek at the following concept footage that shows off the East-meets-West city of bluntly named San Fransokyo:

While Big Hero 6 won’t be shoe-horned into the separate operation that Marvel Studios is running, it’s a hell of a maneuver for the faltering Pixar brand as it opens up a whole new world of possibility. Will this merger allow for Pixar’s return to form or will it be the roots of a whole new strand of disappointment? Time will tell.

Big Hero 6 already has a release date of November 7, 2014. The biggest question that remains is what do they call the sequel? Big Hero 6 2? Big Hero 7? 2 Big 2 Hero 6?

"We've Unmade a Huge Mistake" – Final Poster for ARRESTED DEVELOPMENT

Lately, I’ve been watching Arrested Development (for about the tenth time) to get my insider bits up to snuff as I’m priming for the fated day of May 26 when AD makes it’s glorious return. The show functions so well as a house of jokes riffing on itself and constantly building towards more and more complex gags. Ultimately, the better you know the show, the funnier it gets.

When I hopped on Netflix today, the home screen was flooded with Arrested Development mockups, including a “funniest clip” voted on by Facebook users. It seems that the Netflix marketing camp knows what they’re doing here and they’re using the exclusivity as advertisers on their platform to promote their upcoming show. It’s brilliant. That and they’re blowing up the internet with a slew of character posters, teaser peeks and this final poster that totes the clever little tagline– “We’ve Unmade a Huge Mistake”

Arrested Development stars Jason Bateman, Jeffrey Tambor, Portia De Rossi, Michael Cera, Will Arnett, Tony Hale, Alia Shawkat, Jessica Walter and David Crossand will air exclusively on Netflix with all 15 episodes on Sunday, May 26.

Poster and Teaser Trailer for My Most Anticipated Film of the Year – GRAVITY

Alfonso Cuaron‘s Children of Men was an astonishing piece of work and the mystery and intrigue behind his new film Gravity made me pop it into the highest spot on my Most Anticipated Films of 2013 List. Starring George Clooney and Sandra Bullock as two solitary astronauts stuck on a damaged spacecraft, Gravity tells the story disaster in the worst possible location: space.

One of the most intriguing aspects of  Cuaron’s work is his lengthy shots and Gravity is supposed to open with one breathtaking 17-minute long shot. If Cuaron is able to live up to hype and deliver a film on caliber with Children of Men, I’m sure Gravity will be one of the best the year has to offer.

The trailer is expected to float down to Earth tomorrow so this little teaser and poster will have to do for now:

Gravity is directed by Alfonso Cuaron and stars Sandra Bullock and George Clooney. It hits theaters on October 18.

Trailer for TRUE BLOOD Season 6

http://cdn2-b.examiner.com/sites/default/files/styles/image_content_width/hash/be/35/be357a029fbe92e43bc91c0579a378b1.jpg?itok=0BCfsJfi
In five seasons, True Blood has seen vampires, shifters, plain clothed murders, werewolves, fairies, witches, werepanthers and, er, Maenads. Many believe the show to have jumped the proverbial shark and cling to simpler times when True Blood just involved Southern society adapting to the public knowledge that vampires are indeed real.

With so much going on, the show has gotten a smidge diluted and often it’s hard to keep track of what’s what and who’s who. This has not discouraged the powers that be though as True Blood is pending a sixth season and you can catch a first watch of that trailer right here.

Series regulars Anna Paquin, Alexander Skarsgård, Stephen Moyer, Sam Trammell, Ryan Kwanten, Rutina Wesley, Chris Bauer, Nelsan Ellis, Jim Parrack, Todd Lowe, Jessica Hamby and Joe Manganiello are all expected to return. The new season premieres on HBO on June 16 at 9PM.

Tom Cruise Says Yes to Another MISSION IMPOSSIBLE

What has an A-list movie star, a thriving franchise and this guy’s support? You guessed it: Mission Impossible 5. Although the news is hardly startling, Tom Cruise has signed on for the fifth installment in the popular franchise returning to play IMF agent Ethan Hunt. Last film, there was a lot of speculation that Jeremy Renner was being primed to take over the franchise from an aging Cruise but after the film was both a critical and financial success, there was no need to change the formula. As the adage goes: if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.

Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol was my second favorite movie of 2010, which was a lackluster year in general, so it’s hardly news that I’m in full support of another sequel. While I would love to see Brad Bird return to the director’s chair for this next installment, speculation is pointing to Jack Reacher director Christopher McQuarrie. Although I’ve yet to see Reacher, I haven’t heard much of anything positive so I’m hoping they go with a more inspired and weathered choice than McQuarrie.

Although there aren’t any details about plot, supporting actors, release date or even a working title, Mission Impossible 5 will probably come out sometime in late 2014 or the blockbuster season of summer ’15.

Michael Caine and Jessica Chastain Board Nolan's INTERSTELLAR

After casting both Matthew McConaughey and Anne Hathaway, block-busting guru Christopher Nolan has added two new faces to his sci-fi alternate reality flick InstellarMichael Caine and Jessica Chastain. Caine comes as no surprise as he has been in every Nolan flick since Batman Begins and obviously has a great working relationship with Nolan. I personally love when a filmmaker has a troupe of actors that they can round up whenever something comes along. Up to this point, Caine has been a brilliant addition to all of Nolan’s work and offers up a grounding emotional side to the more action-heavy fare.

Chastain, on the other hand, is a new addition to the Nolan ship and a great bit of casting in my opinion. Nolan’s been notoriously weak with his female characters and casting a top notch thespian like Chastain is sure to prove an effective measure to bolster that feminine presence onscreen. Chastain has been nominated for an Oscar the past two years in a row with her work on The Help and Zero Dark Thirty and is one of the best working actresses of today.

Although Nolan has had little fanfare for the award’s market with his films, he nabbed a Best Supporting for Heath Ledger in The Dark Knight and has always been heralded by critics and fans alike as a more intelligent breed of big action film-making.

Working off of a script written by younger brother Jonathan Nolan, Chris Nolan will be sure to make this film both a visual and visceral flick made for the biggest screen possible. It’s sure to be no surprise that Nolan is pursuing an IMAX format for the film and will be sure to film a vast portion of the big action sequences with the IMAX cameras, regardless of how clunky and noisy they may be during the actual production.
