Elizabeth Olsen, Aaron Taylor Johnson Confirmed for THE AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON

http://wac.450f.edgecastcdn.net/80450F/screencrush.com/files/2013/04/avengers-2-scarlet-witch-quicksilver.jpg
Elizabeth Olsen (Martha May Marlene) and Aaron Taylor Johnson (Kick-Ass) are slated to play twin superheroes, Scarlett Witch and Quicksilver, in Joss Whedon’s The Avengers: Age of Ultron.

Samuel L. Jackson announced Elizabeth Olson’s involvement, while promoting Spike Lee’s upcoming adaptation of Oldboy, saying “I know we’re shooting in London, that James Spader is Ultron and going to be the bad guy, and that we added Ms. Olsen, but I don’t know what she’s doing, if she’s on the inside or the outside. I haven’t seen a script.” Deadline’s source confirmed.

The news lends credibility to the long-time rumors of Aaron Taylor Johnson’s involvement in the film, as he seems to be making his career on comic book movies.

Aaron Taylor Johnson’s Kick-Ass co-star, Evan Peters, is also playing Quicksilver in the upcoming X-Men: Days of Future Past, due to Fox and Marvel sharing the characters rights, so expect the incessantly obnoxious comparisons to begin, when The Avengers: Age of Ultron opens on May 1, 2015.

Taylor Swift Cast in THE GIVER to the Excitement of No One

In a move to delight the singer’s tween audience, enrage readers of books, and generally boost box office returns, Taylor Swift has been cast in the movie adaptation of The Giver, Lois Lowry’s Newberry Medal winning 1993 children’s novel about a frightening dystopian future disguised as a utopia where pain has been eliminated along with emotional depth and memory. Although given that subject matter, Swift’s casting would seem to make sense. Director Phillip Noyce and The Weinstein Company have probably chosen Swift to boost box office returns and slowly chip away at a pillar of your childhood.

The seminal work, heralded ignorantly by Teen Vogue as “the original Hunger Games”, stars Jeff Bridges as the titular character, a community’s living receptacle of all emotion and memory as he trains a precocious youth to take over the role, Jonas (Brenton Thwaites, who will also star in Disney’s upcoming film Malificent in 2014). As you can imagine, things go wrong and the boy and his mentor fight the system in a tale with themes – Contentment vs. Integrity, the Great Society vs. Individual – meaty enough for most middle schools to assign the book to their students. Meryl Streep, Katie Holmes, Odeya Rush, Alexandar Skarsgard and Cameron Monaghan round out the cast.

Harvey Weinstein said of the production that, “We could not have assembled a more impressive cast for this project behind Lois Lowry’s beautiful novel and the directorial talents of Phil Noyce, and are tremendously excited to commence production,” set to begin on October 7th in Cape Town, South Africa.  Neither Weinstein or Noyce, who’s directing credits include Salt and Patriot Games, have commented on whether Swift will show up in the soundtrack as well, although the rumor mill is giving it pretty good odds.

It’s pretty ironic that in a work, which is opposed to sameness and uniform contentment, Noyce and his producers have made no breaks from the norm casting-wise to make this film. Whether it’s contempt for the tween audience The Giver adaptation is marketed to, or the producer’s blatant attempt at raking in the dough at the cost of the source material’s integrity, there are plenty of reasons to dislike this move. Given that it’s part of an increasing trend of pillaging school reading lists for movie ideas, it makes you hope that Weinstein & Co. don’t discover “Animal Farm”, “Lord of the Flies”, or any more childhood favorites to sell to today’s young adults.

The Giver is directed by Phillip Noyce and stars Jeff Bridges, Brenton Thwaites, Meryl Streep, Katie Holmes, Odeya Rush, Alexandar Skarsgard and Cameron Monaghan. It hit theaters August 15, 2014.

AMERICAN HUSTLE's Stacked Cast Gets Character Posters

Anyone invested in this year’s Oscar season already has their eye on David O. Russell‘s American Hustle. Starring Christian Bale, Amy Adams, Bradley Cooper, Jennifer Lawrence, and Jeremy Renner, American Hustle tells the somewhat true story of ABSCAM and is poised to be an Oscar frontrunner. While it’s chances at nabbing the biggest slice of the pie are largely unknown (since no one has actually seen it yet), O. Russell’s track record with getting his actors nominated are inimitably high.

For his last film, Silver Linings Playbook, he earned nominations for Bradley Cooper, Robert DeNiro, and Jennifer Lawrence – with Lawrence taking the win. His film prior to that, The Fighter, got four nominations. That pack included Mark Wahlberg, Amy Adams, Christian Bale, and Mellisa Leo – with Leo and Bale both taking home gold.

Considering his gilded track record and the caliber of talent on this project, it’s safe to say that we can expect a high number of Oscar-qualifying performances from American Hustle.

For now, take a look at these character posters and let me know who you think is most likely to get nominated out of these five. Personally, I give the edge to Bale and Adams because both seem to have juicy character roles, but all five are potential contenders.

American Hustle is directed by David O. Russell and stars Christian Bale, Bradley Cooper, Jennifer Lawrence, Jeremy Renner, Robert De Niro, Michael Peña, Louis C.K. and Amy Adams. It opens in limited theaters on December 13 and opens wide on December 25.

Jared Leto Looks Like an Oscar Winner in New DALLAS BUYERS CLUB Picture

All signs at this point are pointing to Jared Leto (Requiem for a Dream) for year’s Best Supporting Actor. Playing Rayon, a real-life transvestite with AIDS, Leto has undergone a serious physical transformation. Having shed 40 plus pounds (he reportedly stopped counting after forty) for the role, Leto has done very little in his acting career for the past ten years, with his last role four years ago.

After premiering at the Toronto International Film Festival to rave reviews, much of the love for Dallas Buyers Club was targeted at Leto and his heartbreaking performance. While early prognosticators had Matthew McConaughey secured as a serious contender, many overlooked Leto… until they saw him on screen.

Personally, I’m keeping Leto at my top spot in an otherwise lacking field. Competition is sure to ramp up in the coming Oscar-y months but, for now, that Oscar pretty much belongs to Leto.

Dallas Buyers Club is directed Jean-Marc Vallée and stars Matthew McConaughey, Jared Leto, Jennifer Gardner, Steve Zahn, and Kevin Rankin. It hits theaters November 1, 2013.

JACK RYAN: SHADOW RECRUIT Poster Comes As Tom Clancy Goes

If you haven’t yet heard, Tom Clancy, best-selling American espionage author, has passed away at the age of 66. While I wouldn’t call myself a “huge Clancy fan,” I’ve read a few of his novels (“Rainbow Six” was my favorite) and took a stab at a couple of the many, many games that he’s lent his name to. His most famous character though, Jack Ryan, lives on.

Having already been depicted on screen by Alec Baldwin, Ben Affleck and, most famously, Harrison Ford, Chris Pine is now stepping into the role to hopefully launch a new franchise. Following in the footsteps of Clear and Present Danger, Patriot Games, The Hunt for Red October, and The Sum of All Fears, Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit will take the ex-marine back to his roots, wrapping him up with a Russian terrorist plot.

The fact that this poster is being released directly on the heels of Clancy’s passing is a little unsettling and, at least, suggests that perhaps the studio is trying to capitalize on his death. Hopefully the intent is not so nefarious, as a man as influential as Clancy deserves more respect than that.

Directed by Kenneth Branagh (who also plays the villain in the film), Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit will also feature Keira Knightley, Kevin Costner, Nonso Anozie, and David Paymer. For now, the film is slated for a Christmas release but, considering the many turning tides of films lately, it’s been rumored to be moving back into January territory. The fact that we’ve yet to see a trailer lends credence to that rumor.

Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit is directed by Kenneth Branagh and stars Chris Pine, Keira Knightley, Kevin Costner, Nonso Anozie, and David Paymer. It’s currently set up for a Christmas, 2013 release.

2014 Oscar Race Loses Some Serious Contenders

Last week, two serious Oscar contenders declared that they would no longer be vying for the golden ticket this year, as they’ve been pushed to 2014. Boththe Nicole Kidmanstar-vehicle Grace of Monaco and Bennett Miller‘sFoxcatcher with Steve Carrell, Channing Tatum and Mark Ruffalo were originally scheduled for Oscar-qualifying releases this fall but due to “not being finished” have been pushed into the next year.

What is still unclear at this point is whether they will be released in the first quarter of the new year in a period known as “the dumping ground.” Infamous for being a period of flops and failures, the early months of any year don’t usually see much in terms of Oscar chances. On the flip side of the spectrum, since the competition is low, it’s often an easy month for better quality films to sweep up the floor.

Another film on the heels of a move is Martin Scorsese and Leonardo DiCaprio‘s much anticipated The Wolf of Wall Street. Apparently, that film is also not on track to hit it’s November 15 release date and will indefinitely be delayed to a later date. While lots of speculation has suggested that the move will mean a push into 2014, there is still a chance that it makes an Oscar qualifying run in mid-to-late December.

Considering how crowded the release calendar already is for December and how Scorsese’s penultimate film, Shutter Island, make an unexpected boat-ton of money with an early year release, there’s really factors that could mean a shift to both sides of the fence. My hope is that we do see Wolf sometime soon as I’m a huge Leo and Scorsese fan and have high hopes for the film. Having to wait until next year’s fall season would be a huge bummer.

Films shifting unexpectedly is no new phenomenon but having these three big contenders all up and bailing in the span of a week really blows a hole in this year’s ceremonies. A strange coincidence? Maybe. Or perhaps everyone is a little frightened on the heels of the outpouring of love for 12 Years a Slave.

Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg Set Plans for Adult Animated Feature SAUSAGE PARTY

Following the tremendous critical and commercial success of This is the End, director/writer duo Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg have their next project in line and it’s probably not what you expected. A joint production of Sony Pictures Entertainment, Annapurna Pictures and Point Grey, Sausage Party is an existentialist journey of a sausage discovering himself on the eve of the mass sausage-selling holiday, July 4th.

Not your typical animated film, Sausage Party is being described as not at all for kids. Who would have guessed with a name like Sausage Party? Written by Rogen and Goldberg alongside Kyle Hunter and Ariel Shaffir, with story credit also due in part to Jonah Hill, Rogen/Golberg won’t actually be directing the film. In their stead, Conrad Vernon (Shrek 2, Monsters vs. Aliens) and Greg Tiernan will take over that particular duty, freeing the comedy duo up to focus their efforts on other projects as well, including their upcoming comedy, The Neighbors.

 Of the announcement, Columbia Pictures president Hannah Minghella said;

“We’re thrilled to be back in business with Seth and Evan.  This project has all the irreverent, insightful and risqué R-rated humor we have come to expect from them. Matching their unique comic sensibility with an animated film is a fun and inspired idea. We are confident Seth, Evan, Conrad and Greg will deliver one of the most memorable animated movies of all time.”

Jim Carrey and Jeff Bridges Are Harry and Lloyd Once More on Set of DUMB AND DUMBER TO

For years, there have been talks of a sequel to the 1994 comedy classic Dumb and Dumber. Featuring Jim Carrey and Jeff Bridges as two completely moth-minded dweebs, this certified hit represented the peek of critical and commercial success for director bros Peter and Bobby Farrelly. Having all but fallen in obscurity, the Farrelly brothers have had a rash of comedy clunkers (Fever Pitch, Hall Pass, The Three Stooges) but hope to make a grab for that fallen star with Dumb and Dumber To.

In the years following the film, Carey and Bridges’ careers have shifted wildly. Just two nights ago, Bridges took home the Emmy for Best Actor for his work on HBO’s The Newsroom while Carey has largely shifted his focus from comedy to drama…or, let’s be honest, dramedy.

One of the more promising aspects is that the whole gang seems to be involved in the project for personal interest rather than the money. The project was been suggested and put on hold for years. At one point, it almost moved forward without Jim Carrey but, thankfully, those holding the reins got the idea that people weren’t interested in the film without the original comedy duo standing behind it. Luckily, Carrey and Bridge’s schedules have finally aligned, like two magical stars. The question is: will they be able to recapture the magic twenty years on?

Dumb and Dumber To is directed by Peter and Bobby Farrelly and stars Jim Carrey, Jeff Daniels, Kathleen Turner, Rachel Melvin, Brady Bluhm, Laurie Holden, and Steve Tom. There is no official release date yet.

Leonardo DiCaprio Eyes Woodrow Wilson Biopic

Leonardo DiCaprio may have taken on a high profile biopic role or two before in his back – to varying success – but it seems as if the A-list actor is still keen to do more. After making a comment about retiring some months back, Leo seems to be as hardworking as ever and this time has set his sights on a Presidential biopic about the 28th American President, Woodrow Wilson. Most known for signing the Treaty of Versailles and helping form the League of Nations, Wilson just recently re-entered the spotlight due to a hotly debated biography from A. Scott Berg.

For all of his talent and the plenitude of captivating performances DiCaprio has put in, he’s only been nominated for an Academy Award twice. Once for his depiction of aviation tycoon Howard Hughes in Martin Scorsese‘s The Aviator and once for his South African diamond-smuggling-antihero in Blood Diamond. Once thought to be an easy Oscar lock, his turn in Clint Eastwood‘s J. Edgar ended up avoiding any nomination and skirted around most award recognition at all.

But if Steven Spielberg‘s Lincoln is any indication of the draw of a presidential biopic in the 2010s, it’s safe to say that the combination of a strong performance and good source material is sure to draw audiences in en masse. For now, nothing is set in stone. I figure I’ll gauge my interest going forward depending on what other talent ends up getting involved.
