Did the Emperor Knock up A Na'vi? A First Look at Jaime Foxx's Electro from THE AMAZING SPIDERMAN 2

So what do you get when you cross Star Wars‘ malevolent Emperor Palpatine with Avatar‘s blue monkey people, the Na’vi? Well Jamie Foxx‘s Electro from The Amazing Spiderman 2 of course! Or at least that’s what these initially production photos look like. Even those these photos are deemed unofficial, they still offer a pretty detailed look at the veiny blueness of the lightning based Spiderman villain.

While this blue look way is more in tune with the Ultimate version of the character, the tracking dots lining his hoodie definitely indicate that there will be some special effects to accompany this get-up so we’re not quite judging the finished product. To me, it looks a little silly but I’m hoping that marrying some good special effects with all that practical makeup with turn his into an intriguing villain.

Also interesting to note is that Electro won’t be the only Spidey villain in this follow up as actor Paul Giamatti (Sideways) only joined the picture after stating his avid desire to play the Rhino. Dane DeHaan (Chronicle) has also hopped on-board to play Harry Osburn (who was played by James Franco in Sam Raimi‘s iterations of the film). Now those familiar with that trilogy will remember that Franco turned into the new Goblin in Spiderman 3 which really added to the sense of overcrowding in that film. Here’s hoping that The Amazing Spiderman 2 takes note of that mistake and doesn’t overdo it on the villains.

The Amazing Spiderman 2 will see the return director Marc Webb and stars Andrew Garfield and Emma Stone but also features a whole cast of new actors including: Dane DeHaanShailene WoodleyPaul GiamattiFelicity Jones, Chris Cooper, and Sally Field. The Amazing Spiderman 2 opens May 2, 2014.

ARRESTED DEVELOPMENT Posters Tease Glorious Return

Perhaps the wittiest television show to ever grace the silver screen, Arrested Development was cancelled by Fox in 2006 in a particularly brutal fashion. Show-runner Mitchell Hurwitz and Co. begged and pleaded. They upped the celebrity cameos. They even threw a bunch of winking jokes to save the show into the script but nothing worked as they were disrespectfully strong-armed off the air with their final four episodes back to back playing against the 2006 Winter Olympic’s opening ceremony.

Although it never garnished much of an audience during it’s original run, DVD sales made the show a cult hit after it’s cancellation. Then along came Netflix and Arrested Development became a bona fide international phenomenon. Everyone and their mother knows the show nowadays. So when rumors starting stirring that Netflix Original Series would resurrect the show for one more season, everyone got a little tingly inside.

Today, you’re sure to get that tingly feeling a-going again with 9 new posters which each tease a different character. Returning to the show is the entirety of the original cast- Jason Bateman, Jeffrey Tambor, Portia De Rossi, Michael Cera, Will Arnett, Tony Hale, Alia Shawkat, Jessica Walter and David Cross. In this season though, each will be featured in their own episode; a ‘where-are-they-now’ kind of situation that is expected to lead into a feature film.

Arrested Development will air exclusively on Netflix with all 15 episodes on Monday, May 25.

Hathaway Hops Onboard Nolan's INTERSTELLAR

After casting news last week that Matthew McConaughey has joined Christopher Nolan‘s next ambitious project, Interstellar, today brings news that Anne Hathaway has hopped aboard as well. While there are still precious few details about the film, we do know that it’ll hover in the sci-fi genre and tackle time travel, worm holes, alternative realities and the like.

Nolan has a penchant for onion-like stories shrouded in mystery and is known for playing things close to his chest so don’t expect many details to leak about the project until the big man wants them to. After a resounding success with the Dark Knight trilogy and Inception both, Nolan has proved his weight in gold which is why he’s one of the few working directors who can pull a massive budget for a non-established, non-franchise film.

While I still can’t help but shake my natural bitterness towards Hathaway’s sugar-coated-princess persona, I do think she has been showing her worth as an actress, particularly with her go as Catwoman in The Dark Knight Rises and her Oscar winning sad-sack-sing-song-performance in the feel-good, super-uplifting Les Miserables. While I would have had more reservations before her surprisingly pleasant turns this year, it seems that Hathaway won Nolan over and he is certainly a director who likes to revisit actors/actresses he’s worked with before- see Michael Caine, Cillian Murphy, Christian Bale, Ken Watanabe .

Outside of this tidbit of casting news, Nolan has also reportedly been scouting out shooting locations in Iceland, a destination that seems to be transforming into the go-to locale for sci-fi shoots- see Prometheus, Oblivion, Game of Thrones and Darren Aronofsky‘s upcoming Noah.

Don’t get too excited quite yet because Interstellar won’t come to theaters until November 7, 2014.  Until then, we’ll just have to play the waiting game.

First Images from 300: RISE OF AN EMPIRE

With a release date of August 2, the following two pictures offer the first look at the followup to Zack Synder‘s 300. Titled 300: Rise of an Empire, this sequel-that-was-a-prequel is now more of a simul, as it takes place within roughly the same time frame as the original but on a different battleground with different characters.

Whereas the events of 300 led to the battle of Thermopylae between King Leonidas, his 300 warriors and king-god Xerxes, this film will depict the events of Battle of Artemisium. Even though these battles actually took place, the whole 300 universe is unbound by the annals of history, a fact clearly evident by the fantastical elements penned in Mark Miller’s source material.

300: Rise of an Empire will follow the exploits of Greek general Themistokles played by Sullivan Stapleton (pictured below) and his much-less-trained militia as they battle the seemingly limitless Persian army at sea under the command of Artemesia (Eva Green).

Although the slo-mo heavy visual effects of 300 have been largely influential over the past decade, I found the fast-and-loose plotting and character development more than underwhelming. In the end, the film seemed like a really long trailer- eye popping visuals and quotable little soundbites with nothing to tie it together. While I don’t have much faith in this follow-up thingamajig, there are sure to be faithful legions of fans anxiously awaiting it’s release.

With Synder busy on other projects like Man of Steel, the directing reins were passed down to Noam Murro whose only other directing credit is 2008’s pretty much panned, Smart People. Synder remains on-board the project as a producer and also is credited as screenplay writer. With a late summer release, the marketing engine is sure to be whirling up soon so expect a teaser trailer sometime in the next month.

Fishing for Details with FINDING NEMO Sequel, FINDING DORY

Oh Pixar, how far the mighty have fallen. Even though you scored the Best Animated Film win this year for your derivative princess story Brave, many of us believe it was not a victory deserved. Transformed from a studio of unique ingenuity that brought us films like Wall-E, Up and Ratatouille, Pixar has seemed to reduce itself to a sequel assembly line churning out Monsters University this year and the yet another follow up with Finding Nemo 2, now officially titled Finding Dory, in 2015.

The following press release gives some more detail for the film:

“I have waited for this day for a long, long, long, long, long, long time,” said DeGeneres. “I’m not mad it took this long. I know the people at Pixar were busy creating ‘Toy Story 16.’ But the time they took was worth it. The script is fantastic. And it has everything I loved about the first one: It’s got a lot of heart, it’s really funny, and the best part is—it’s got a lot more Dory.”

Director and Pixar veteran Andrew Stanton takes audiences back to the extraordinary underwater world created in the original film. “There is no Dory without Ellen,” said Stanton. “She won the hearts of moviegoers all over the world—not to mention our team here at Pixar. One thing we couldn’t stop thinking about was why she was all alone in the ocean on the day she met Marlin. In ‘Finding Dory,’ she will be reunited with her loved ones, learning a few things about the meaning of family along the way.”

According to Stanton, “Finding Dory” takes place about a year after the first film, and features returning favorites Marlin, Nemo and the Tank Gang, among others. Set in part along the California coastline, the story also welcomes a host of new characters, including a few who will prove to be a very important part of Dory’s life.

Finding Dory releases in theaters on November 25th, 2015.

Nolan Offers McConaughey INTERSTELLAR Lead

Director Christopher Nolan has reached out to Matthew McConaughey to offer him the starring role in his next feature, a multi-layered, complicated sci-fi flick, Interstellar. In the past few years, McConaughey has attempted to reinvent himself, transitioning from a shirtless rom-com hunk into, how do I put it, an actor. With standout roles in Magic Mike, Killer Joe, and The Lincoln Lawyer, not to mention his already buzzing upcoming roles in Mud, Dallas Buyers Club and Martin Scorsese‘s The Wolf of Wall Street, it seems that McConaughey has impressed the right people. With his recent trend of making good films, it’s hard to imagine that he’d pass up an opportunity to work with such a historic and popular director.

Warner Bros. and Paramount will send Interstellar to theaters  November 7, 2014 and “will depict a heroic interstellar voyage to the furthest reaches of our scientific understanding.”

Wachowski's Take to Netflix Original Series with SENSE8

Netflix Original Series has really stepped up their game quickly. From the victory that was Lilyhammer to the commercial and critical success of House of Cards, the pending release of a much wanted reunion for Arrested Development and the first promising trailer for Eli Roth’s Hemlock Grove, Netflix Original Series seems all for locking down talented show runners. Next on their platter, Sense8 a sci-fi thriller from the Wachowski siblings (The Matrix, Cloud Atlas)

Sense8 comes from the mind of the Wachowski’s and Babylon 5’s J. Michael Straczynski and follows the story about a band of people around the globe who’s minds are inexplicably linked as they are hunted down for unknown reasons. The show is said to embody the message of how technology is both great and devastating. Talking about the project, The Wachowski’s said:

“Several years ago, we had a late night conversation about the ways technology simultaneously unites and divides us, and out of that paradox ‘Sense8’ was born.”

Don’t expect Sense8 to come to Netflix anytime soon as they still have to finish up working on Jupiter Ascending.

New Christopher Nolan Film INTERSTELLAR Gets Dated

A dream within a wormhole within time travel within a dream within a wormholm within….

Blockbuster mastermind Christopher Nolan has wowed audiences over the last decade with his innovative original features Inception, The Prestige and Memento but is more closely associated with much loved Dark Knight trilogy. Nolan managed to turn a faltering franchise, whose last film iteration featured George Clooney‘s nipples, into a grounded and complex saga that reignited the spark of superhero potential. Now that Nolan has wrapped up his take on the Dark Knight, he is free to set his sights on more original fare in line with Inception and his next feature film, Interstellar, seems like it will be just as grand and macroscopic as that film.

Under the collective banners of Warner Bros. and Paramount, Interstellar will be hitting theaters on November 7, 2014 and will be sure to make a mighty box office blow. According to the studio:

“The film will depict a heroic interstellar voyage to the furthest reaches of our scientific understanding.”

Nolan, and the title of the film alone, has made it clear that this filmic journey will take place in the galactic realm and will involve worm holes and likely alternate realities. Although no cast has yet been assembled, I’m going to go ahead and assume that he’ll at least be pulling a fair share for his regular corral of actors. I’d be willing to bet that at least two of the following are cast: Christian Bale, Michael Caine, Cillian Murphy, Ken Watanbe.

I personally am glad to hear that Nolan is still willing to challenge himself and his audiences and I’ll be sure to be waiting in line for this one. As for whether we’ll see him returning to superhero fare as a exec. producer for Justice League, we’ll have to wait and see.
