Poster for GODZILLA Reboot is Actually Pretty Sweet

I kind of want to kick myself for saying it but I really like this Comic Con teaser poster for the next big installation in the monster king himself: Godzilla. As more of a remake of Toho‘s classic – not to be confused with the Roland Emmerich version with Matthew Broderick – than a continuation of any kind, we can all pray that it’ll be better than Pacific Rim.

Directed by Gareth Edwards (Monsters) and stars Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Elizabeth Olsen, Bryan Cranston, Ken Watanabe and Juliette Binoche, it really has an unbelievable stacked cast which gives me faith that they must have some confidence in the vision behind this one.

Check Out Mecha-Tom Cruise in EDGE OF TOMORROW Teaser Poster

You may be unfamiliar with the name Edge of Tomorrow, as it has been going by the moniker “All You Need is Kill” until quite recently, but it is the same project entirely. Directed by Doug Liman of The Bourne Identity, Edge of Tomorrow follows officer Bill Cage (Cruise). Suited up in some advanced mecha gear, Cage is killed in alien combat and subsequently reanimated via a time rift to return to fight the same battle and die again…and again…and again.

Essentially Groundhog Day meets Terminator, Edge of Tomorrow stars Tom Cruise, Emily Blunt, Bill Paxton and Charlotte Riley. Personally, the concept works for me and I like this first look. Furthermore, Cruise and Blunt sound like a good combo especially with an intelligent director like Liman standing behind the project. Are you excited to see more of this?

Nolan Adds John Lithgow and Ellen Burstyn to INTERSTELLAR Cast List

Just when the Interstellar cast is looking as stacked as it could possibly be, nerd-god Christopher Nolan goes and adds John Lithgow (Rise of the Planet of the Apes) and Ellen Burstyn (Requiem for a Dream) to his already massive cast. Burstyn’s work in Requiem is one of the most overlooked, and absolutely best, performances of all time and Lithgow, though know most for his leading role in Third Rock From the Sun and his villain in Cliffhanger, put in an Emmy-winning performance on Dexter‘s glorious fourth season.

Additionally, Timothée Chalamet (Homeland) and Mackenzie Foy (The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 2) hoped on board this morning as well. Joining a cast that already includes Matthew McConaughey, Anne Hathaway, Jessica Chastain, Casey Affleck, Bill Irwin and Michael Caine, Lithgow and Burstyn are just more welcome talent into a project that really seems to be shaping up to be undeniably epic.

Nolan is noted for returning to cast members such as Christian Bale, who has starred in four films with him, Cillian Murphy, also in four, Ken Watanabe, four again, with Marion Cotillard, Tom Hardy and Joseph Gordon Levitt all having boarded The Dark Knight franchise after working with Nolan on Inception. This time around though, Nolan seems to be dropping his troupe of regulars and working with a whole new slew of talent. Most notably in Nolan’s stable though is Caine, who has been in all of Nolan’s films but one, who will continue that streak here again alongside fellow Dark Knight Rises cast member Anne Hathaway.

Interstellar is directed by Christopher Nolan and stars Matthew McConaughey, Anne Hathaway, Jessica Chastain, Casey Affleck, Bill Irwin, Michael Caine, John Lithgow, Ellen Burstyn, Timothée Chalamet and Mackenzie Foy. It hits theaters November 7, 2014.

Cap's Shield Needs a Paint Job in Teaser Poster for CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE WINTER SOLDIER

Apparently the little kerfuffle back in The Avengers where Thor leaped through the air and brought his Godly-powered magical hammer down on Captain America’s shield was horseplay compared to the carnage going down in this sequel, Captain America: The Winter Solider, as the All-Americano custom job on Cap’s shield is chipping away like bargain-bin paint. While this teaser hardly gives us much to go on in terms of character or plot, it seems pretty congruous with the dark-horse sophomore picture that superhero films seem to be so fond of nowadays.

If the first films in a planned franchise are now exclusively origin stories, the follow-ups seem to be finding their own pattern where the hero is faced with a breed of “darkness” that they never could have imagined. Since Batman Begins, the whole genre has undergone a categorical shift in tone with everyone and their mother trying to emulate the dark, gritty nature of Nolan’s franchise. But up to this point, Marvel has done a good job at keeping things light (almost too much at times) so we’ll see have deep down the rabbit hole they plan to take us with this second installment.

Captain America: The Winter Solider is based on the popular comic line in which Cap’s old friend and war buddy Sebastian Stan returns as his arch-nemesis; an assassin also frozen in time, the Winter Soldier. So long as he’s not spouting off lines like “Ice to meet you*,” or “You are not sending me to the cooler*” or worst of all, “What killed the dinosaurs? The ice age! (proceed to blast freeze ray)*” then I’ll give this a shot.

*These are all actual lines from Batman and Robin‘s Mr Freeze, as is “Allow my to break the ice,” “Stay cool, bird boy,” “Let’s kick some ice,” “Cool party,” and the classic “Revenge is a dish best served cold.”

Captain America: The Winter Soldier is directed by Anthony Russo, Joe Russo stars Chris Evans, Anthony Mackie, Frank Grillo, Cobie Smulders, Samuel L. Jackson, Sebastian Stan, Scarlett Johansson, Toby Jones, Emily VanCamp and Robert Redford. It hits theaters April 4, 2014.

Spike Lee's OLDBOY Remake Gets an Artsy Poster

Ten years after Chan-wook Park’s Korean film Oldboy made waves internationally, American filmmaker Spike Lee‘s remake is closing in on its October release date. Starring Josh Brolin as a man who is kidnapped, held for twenty years and then suddenly released, Oldboy is a bloody story of vengeance. The film co-stars Samuel L. Jackson, Elizabeth Olsen and Michael Imperioli.

This first official poster is rather metaphorical and I like it. Brolin looking cool bustin’ out of a box? I’m sold.

Oldboy is directed by Spike Lee and stars Josh Brolin, Samuel L Jackson, Elizabeth Olsen and Michael Imperioli. It hits theaters on October 25.

First Look at Darren Aronofsky's NOAH

Darren Aronofsky‘s Noah has been a long time coming and moved to the forefront of his impending projects after abandoning The Wolverine, effectively dooming it to inevitable mediocrity. But don’t expect this Biblical tale to be a preachy fantasy as Aronofsky’s indelibly dark touch will be sure to make this a dark thematic exploration of survivor’s guilt.

Noah is also expected to take a substantial philosophical stance on environmentalism, as Aronofsky claimed:

“I think it’s really timely because it’s about environmental apocalypse which is the biggest theme, for me, right now for what’s going on on this planet. So I think it’s got these big, big themes that connect with us. Noah was the first environmentalist. He’s a really interesting character. Hopefully they’ll let me make it.”

This first pictures won’t quite blow your mind but they give you a better look at the characters at play in this bible epic as well as the stand out cast that will be playing them. Russel Crowe will fill the sandals of the the eponymous Noah, Emma Watson is daughter, Ila, Logan Lerman is son, Ham, Jennifer Connelly is Noah’s wife Naameh, Anthony Hopkins is Noah’s father, Methuselah and Ray Winstone is the yet unnamed villain. Check them all out below.

Russel Crowe as Noah
Anthony Hopkins as Methuselah
Emma Watson as Ila
Jennifer Connelly as Naameh
Logan Lerman as Ham
Ray Winstone as the big bad wolf.

Noah is directed by Darren Aronofsky and stars Russell Crowe, Jennifer Connelly, Emma Watson, Logan Lerman, Anthony Hopkins, Ray Winstone, Kevin Durand, Douglas Booth and Dakota Goyo. It storms into theaters March 28, 2014.

Robert Downey Jr. Signs for AVENGERS 2 & 3

After a little kerfuffle about whether Robert Downey Jr. would walk away from the hugely popular Marvel after his five picture contract expired with Iron Man 3, he has signed on to do at least two more films in the franchise with the not yet titled Avengers 2 and Avengers 3. Word is that RDJ wants to have more time on his plate to do other projects so it’s still unclear whether he will be returning for Iron Man 4. The fact that this new contract does not stipulate a fourth film in the record-setting franchise, however, is evidence enough that there probably will not be another Iron Man stand alone film…at least with Downey Jr.

Even Joss Whedon, the director of The Avengers, stated that he wouldn’t be interested in being part of the follow-up without RDJ’s presence. RDJ got onboard with Marvel early on, and has been a part of more of the franchise’s films than anyone else, so his contract was not the 9-picture deal that has become the standard bearer for newcomers to the Marvel universe such as Chris Hemsworth, who plays Thor, and Chris Evans, who plays Captain America.

With the staggering success of Iron Man 3 and The Avengers, it’s still unclear how much draw Thor and Cap have independent of their superhero collective but we shall see when Thor: The Dark World and Captain America: The Winter Soldier open in November and April 2014, respectively.

First Poster for THE HOBBIT: THE DESOLATION OF SMAUG

After adapting the tomes of J.R.R. Tolkien‘s Lord of the Rings series into three massively scaled films, Peter Jackson made the folly of trying to do the same with the 276-page The Hobbit. Splicing the minor film into three films seemed like a poor choice from the get-go so it was no huge surprise that The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey was a big letdown.

If the sequel, the smugly named Desolation of Smaug, has anything going for it, it’s low expectations- exactly opposite to what An Unexpected Journey had working against it. While I can’t help but admit that my faith level in the franchise as it exists is hardly soaring, there are worse things in the world than hanging out in Middle Earth for a few hours.

This first look at The Hobbit: Desolation of Smaug cues us into the fact that Smaug (voiced by Benedict Cumberbatch), and his layer, will indeed play a large role in the film. Oh and we’ll probably see Legolas chilling somewhere too.

The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug
is directed by Peter Jackson and stars Martin Freeman, Benedict Cumberbatch, Ian McKellen, Hugo Weaving, Luke Evans, Cate Blanchette, Evangeline Lilly, Richard Artmitage, Elijah Wood, Christopher Lee, Andy Serkis and Stephen Fry. It hits theaters over this holiday season on December 13.

Kate is an Elf in HOBBIT: THE WHOSIT OF WHATSIT

Oh Kate, the places you’ll go. Even behind those pointed ears, Zelda get-up and flaming red hair, I can still spot that lovably injured Lost character as Evangeline Lilly, who for all intense and purposes may as well just be Kate, makes her jump to Peter Jackson‘s world of Rings and things. Lilly is to play Tauriel in The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug and correct me if I’m wrong but I’m pretty sure she is an invented character (or one found when rummaging through those Appendices).

Kate, er Lilly, described her character as a warrior elf who won’t hesitate to kill. Sounds like the good ol’ Kate that I know. Now we just have to wait for her to get wrapped up in a love triangle between Bilbo and Gandalf that will never quite be resolved.

What do you think about all this fluffing up of the Hobbit story? Are you a fan of what Jackson is trying to do or do you think this dog is in need of a muzzle?

Sam Mendes Returning for Bond 24 and Maybe 25

After wrapping Skyfall, Sam Mendes (American Beauty) denied being interested in returning for any future installments of Bond. Although he claims to have had a good experience working with the iconic franchise, he needed to return to other projects, both within the film and theatrical world. Apparently a big, fat paycheck has changed his mind as Mendes is now confirmed to return for Bond 24 and is highly likely to also shoot Bond 25.

As to whether these features will shoot back-to-back is still unknown but speculation has pointed to A. these two films telling one narrative arc and B. they will be Daniel Craig‘s final Bond features. Having a director shoot two consecutive Bond movies is unheard of, let alone three so this is a definitive shift in the way that the Bond estate does business.

Putting this into context of reports that Christopher Nolan will be stepping aboard a Bond film, this perfectly sets up a Nolan-helmed Bond 26 as a relaunch with a new face for Bond. If  MGM can just speed this train up on these next two Bond films then we could look for that Nolan relaunch around 2018.
