After five long years in development hell and a series of reshuffled release dates, including rumors that the finished product may be regelated to a streaming service dump or never even see the light of day, the latest look at X-Men: New Mutants promises not only an April 2, 2020 release date but an actual theatrical release. The capstone X-Men film has been the talk of a lot of controversy, with one big part of the discussion centering around extensive, narrative-altering reshoots and X-Men: New Mutants being caught out in the cold in the midst of the Disney-Fox merger. Despite all the goings-on behind the scenes, today we finally get a new look at X-Men: New Mutants and it looks, well, just as potential-ridden as ever.

From director Josh Boone (The Fault in Our Stars), X-Men: New Mutants features Anya Taylor-Joy as Illyana Rasputin/Magik, Maisie Williams as Rahne Sinclair/Wolfsbane, Charlie Heaton as Sam Guthrie/Cannonball, Henry Zaga as Roberto da Costa/Sunspot, Blu Hunt as Danielle Moonstar/Mirage and Alice Braga as Cecilia Reyes. The plot revolves around a group of young inpatient mutants held at a psychiatric ward as their superpowers are studied and controlled. As the trailer clearly shows, the film looks to blend elements of traditional horror/thriller films in with the superhero setting.

With the X-Men franchise as we know it reaching a conclusion with widely unpopular X-Men: Dark Phoenix, New Mutants serves as a kind of final capstone, as it’s unlikely that the new Disney overlords are going to want to pursue the dark direction established with these new characters. I doubt that Kevin Feige and the Marvel Cinematic Universe crew will attempt to co-opt any of these characters and carry them on into the Phase Four or Five when Mutants are finally introduced into the MCU so Disney must think that the cut they have of New Mutants will connect with audiences, lest they just plop it on one of their streaming services or other.

Check out the new trailer below:

The official synopsis reads:

20th Century Fox in association with Marvel Entertainment presents “The New Mutants,” an original horror thriller set in an isolated hospital where a group of young mutants is being held for psychiatric monitoring. When strange occurrences begin to take place, both their new mutant abilities and their friendships will be tested as they battle to try and make it out alive.

X-Men: New Mutants hits wide theaters April 2, 2020.
