A long time ago, in Hollywood, Star Wars roared to life, forever changing the blockbuster landscape and fan culture worldwide. Eight Skywalker movies later (and a few spin-offs with many, many, many more down the line) and we’ve finally reached the end of the road for Luke, Anakin, Leia, Rey, Chewie, Kylo, and that pesky Palpatine fellow. Allegedly. With Disney busy brewing not one but two new trilogy series and a number of smaller screen projects (from the highly anticipated The Mandolorian to a Cassian Andor spin-off and the return of Ewan McGregor’s Obi-Wan) sliding onto Disney+, it’s finally time to let the past die. And with it, so concludes the nine-film installment now referred to as Skywalker Saga.

Daisy Ridley, Adam Driver, John Boyega, Oscar Isaac, Billie Lourd, Naomi Ackie, Lupita Nyong’o, Domhnall Gleeson, Kelly Marie Tran, Richard E. Grant, Keri Russell, Mark Hamill, Anthony Daniels, Billy Dee Williams, Ian McDiarmid and, via the magic of previously unused footage, Carrie Fisher will all return to a galaxy far far away one last time, under the direction of J.J. Abrams, who ushered this new trilogy to life with 2016’s mega-hit The Force Awakens.

Take your last look at the Skywalker swan song, but do not be tempted to read too much into any of this. Remember Abrams is notorious for building mystery. One thing he’s not so proven at though: resolving said mystery.

This final trailer asks many a question: Will Rey be tempted by the dark side? Is Emperor Palpatine really back? How will Skywalker rise if the last Skywalker is dead? Who are Rey’s fucking parents? And, finally, will Kylo Ren show off his sweet pecs again? All will be revealed when Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker opens December 20, 2019.
