Marvel has enjoyed an uncharted rise in popularity since setting things off with Iron Man in 2008. Seven years and 12 films later and their success has changed the landscape of film franchises. World building is now a common phrase around Hollywood boardrooms with more and more properties attempting to hop on the bandwagon that propelled The Avengers to becoming the third (now fourth to Jurassic World) highest grossing film of all time. But as other studios are rushing to assemble their superteams, Marvel is set to break theirs down with Captain America: Civil War.
Set after the events of The Avengers: Age of Ultron, Civil War pits Iron Man and Captain America against each other due to their opposing position on campaign that would force “heroes” to register in a national database. Following the events of Winter Solider – where baddies aimed a sky-high super-targeting weapon at anyone they deemed “unfriendly” – it’s obvious why this could be problematic.
The Captain America: Civil War trailer sees Cap reunite with a Bucky Barnes who seems to have snapped back into reality. Ganging up with Hawkeye, Falcon, Bucky and Sharon Carter, a.k.a. Agent 13, Captain America will battle Iron Man, Black Widow, Vision, Black Panther and War Machine. The real question is, will the stakes finally be raised or will Captain America: Civil War just be more of the smash-and-bash same? Watch the trailer and make up your own mind.
Captain America: Civil War open May 6, 2016 and will be the first film in Marvel’s Phase Three.
