Poster For Lars von Trier's NYMPHOMANIAC Hints at Double Teaming

Chartering a woman named Joe’s sex life from birth to age 50, Lars von Trier‘s Nymphomaniac will be sure to shock and ostracize critics and the public at large. Trier has a penchant for tiptoeing the line between film and snuff and it’s hard to imagine that this one won’t be just as perverse and challenging as his most offensive and challenging work. The first official image featured a topless Joe (Charlotte Gainsbourg) sandwiched between two equally bare black bulls and this poster seems to be all but suggesting the same kind of gang-bangin’ situation. Oh Lars, how you be so tasteful?

There’s a fine line between art and pornography and I have a feeling the MPAA is gonna come down hard on Trier and slap this with the dreaded NC-17, that is if it gets rated at all. Trier’s second to last film, Antichrist, didn’t bother with a rating and so I guessed I shouldn’t have been so shocked when I saw full penetration in slo-mo, that same fully penetrating penis getting lobbed off or a woman circumcising herself with a dirty pair of scissors. Yeahhhhh… Antichrist wasn’t quite my favorite movie of all time.

Nymphomaniac is directed by Lars von Trier and stars Charlotte Gainsbourg,  Stacy Martin, Shia Labeouf, Jamie Bell, Connie Nielsen, Mia Goth, Jens Albinus, Severin von Hoensbroech, Peter Gilberg Cotton, Nicolas Bro, Tabea Tarbiat, Janine Romanowski, Jesper Christensen, Tania Carlin, Felicity Gilbert and Shanti Roney. There is no release date nor is does it have a festival lined up for its premiere yet.

Concept Art for CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE WINTER SOLDIER

Marvel madness continues with a first look at what is sure to be the eponymous villain for Captain America: The Winter Soldier, AKA Captain America 2. Although this is only a piece of concept art, it gives a sneak peek as to what this Winter Solider will look like. Rocking a Bane mask, aviator goggles and a big high caliber rifle, the Winter Solider is a friend-turned-arch nemesis for Cap. Many suggested after the first Captain America, when Bucky Barnes, Steve Roger’s best friend, fell to his apparent death he was actually just being set up for an inevitable return as the iconic villain in future installments.

MMU (Marvel Movie Universe) guru Kevin Feige had the following to say for this Cap sequel:

“We weren’t going back to World War II. Cap cannot travel in time. So while Tony can go home to Malibu and Thor goes up to Asgard and Hulk can sort of ride the rails, Cap was stuck. So Cap does stay with S.H.I.E.L.D. because he has nowhere else to go. But he’s not necessarily comfortable there. And just as he’s given permission to let go of the past and to focus on the modern world, a ghost comes up. With the Greatest Generation in World World II, there’s a tendency to reflect on that period and say, ‘Things were black and white back then, and now it’s hard to know who the bad guys are.’ ‘We wanted to play on that a little wit Cap being uncomfortable with the way S.H.I.E.L.D., and in particular Nick Fury, operates.”

Captain America: The Winter Solider is directed by Anthony and Joe Russo and stars Chris Evans, Scarlett Johansson, Codie Smulders, Samuel L. Jackson, Anthony Mackie, Robert Redford, Hayley Atwell, Toby Jones, Sebastian Stan as the Winter Soldier. It hits theaters April 4, 2014.

Little Good Ship Chased by Big Evil Ship in STAR TREK INTO DARKNESS IMAX Poster

If you’re like me, you’ve been trying your best to avoid the onslaught of Star Trek Into Darkness marketing. Whether this means charging out of the theater during it’s previews, ducking your head when tv spots come on and even popping in headphones or humming along to yourself any time one of what seems like 7,000 trailers appear, we don’t know to know what is gonna transpire in J.J. Abram‘s sci-fi sequel.

Since I’ve been trying to keep myself out of the loop, I’m not exactly sure what this IMAX poster is referencing in the fact but I assume that the big ship shooting red lasers at the little ship (which I’m assuming is the Enterprise) is commanded by the evil dude who’s played by Benedict Cumberbatch. Regardless of what it actually says about the film, the poster is pretty certifiably BA.

Star Trek into Darkness stars Chris Pine, Benedict Cumberbatch, Zachary Quinto, Anton Yelchin, John Cho, Karl Urban, Simon Pegg, and Zoe Saldana and is directed by J.J. Abrams with a script from Alex Kurtzman, Damon Lindelof and Roberto Orci.  It opens May 17th with select IMAX 3D theaters starting May 15th.

A Bunch of Character Posters for ARRESTED DEVELOPMENT

When I heard that Arrested Development would officially return nearly seven years after its cancellation, like a time-abiding Jesus, I was both ecstatic and worried. The experience of AD was short and sweet – a steady crescendo that built upon its jokes episode-after-episode to side-splitting hilarity- but it left off on such a high note that that former glory seems nearly impossible to re-attain.

My only concern with this revival is that they are forced to start from somewhat of a clean slate and will spend some time re-building the carefully laid house-of-jokes that defined the whole program. My gut tells me that Mitch Hurtwitz and Co will, however, just launch right back in, making the show a bit of a sink-or-swim experience. Honestly, I think it has enough of a following and certainly the hilarious history to warrant just picking up where they left off and I think going outside of the regular networks will work in it’s favor.

This newest slew of character posters attempts to clue people into to the fact that the new episodes will be appearing on NetFlix by using some of these character’s classic one-liners.

Arrested Development stars Jason Bateman, Jeffrey Tambor, Portia De Rossi, Michael Cera, Will Arnett, Tony Hale, Alia Shawkat, Jessica Walter and David Crossand will air exclusively on Netflix with all 15 episodes on Monday, May 25.

Seattle International Film Festival Line-Up Loaded With Gems

http://www.threeimaginarygirls.com/files/uploaded-images/Seattle%20International%20Film%20Festival_0.jpg

Today, the Seattle International Film Festival  unveiled its full lineup for this year’s festival. As this will be my first year covering it (and my first time covering any festival of this pedigree), I anxiously anticipated what the organizers had in store and the answers are pretty exciting. Running from May 16-June 9, SIFF has more to offer than ever before.

SIFF officially launches with Joss Whedon‘s Much Ado About Nothing at its Opening Night Gala. Famously filmed in a mere 12 days, this modernized Shakespeare adaptation tells the tale of love unacquainted and unrequited. Whedon is expected to attend alongside stars Alexis Denisof, Amy Acker, Nathan Fillion, and Clark Gregg.

While Whedon’s black-and-white Bard tale will be sure to charm audiences, Sofia Coppola‘s The Bling Ring, which will close out the festival, delves into the toxic allure of crime and celebrity in this true-life story of a band of teenage thieves who rob the richest of Hollywood’s stars.

Other notable entries to the festival include:

    • Blackfish
      Blackfish
documents the much-publicized 2010 killing of an orca whale trainer at SeaWorld. It premiered at this year’s Sundance Festival, posing poignant questions about the tactics and ethics of this multinational but predominantly corporate aquarium.

  • Byzantium
From the director of Interview With A Vampire, Neil Jordan‘s Byzantium is a mystery thriller that features (you guessed it) vampires. Starring Saoirse Ronan and Gemma Arterton, Byzantium has been called a stylish and seductive film that mixes up the familiar vampiric tropes.

  •  Decoding Annie Parker
    Decoding Annie Parker
is based on the true story of geneticist Mary-Claire King, who, faced with colleague ridicule and disbelief, proved that breast cancer is born of heredity rather than chance. Featuring a strong cast with Helen Hunt, Aaron Paul, Samantha Morton, Bradley Whitford, Maggie Grace, Alice Eve and Rashida Jones, this film charters how cancer was just almost cured.

  • Epic
From Dreamworks Studios comes this animated feature about the smaller things, er, people in life. Much like Ferngully, Epic takes us to a microscopic level where little people battle malevolent animals in order to save the forest that they love so dearly.

  • Frances Ha
Following up on a pair of sobering and darkly comical critical darlings, Greenberg and The Squid and The Whale, Noah Baumbach takes his distinctive touch to Frances Ha, a “quirky romantic comedy” set to the backdrop of New York City which is already winning the critics over in droves.

  • Monsters University
Rewinding time back to when monsters Sulley and Mike met at college, this prequel is Pixar‘s latest offering. After a string of misses, Monsters University has a chance to bring the heart and charm back to a studio once renown for just that.

  • The Way, Way Back
Starring Liam James (The Killing), Toni Collette (United States of Tara), Steve Carell (The Office) and Sam Rockwell (Moon), The Way, Way Back is a coming of age story about a circular kid trying to fit into a square hole who finds an unlikely friend at a water park.

  • Twenty Feet From Stardom
A documentary by Morgan Neville, Twenty Feet From Stardom aims the spotlight at the oft-unnoticed backup singers for some of the world’s best talent. The film will feature interviews by Stevie Wonder, Mick Jagger, Sheryl Crowe and Bette Midler as they talk about these unsung stars living in the periphery of stardom.Seattle International Film Festival
    May 16- June 9, 2013
  • V/H/S 2
While last year’s cult hit V/H/S hardly reinvented the wheel with its found footage montage premise, it made waves in the horror genre for doing what horror movies should — scaring the pants off people. This structureless compilation follows almost exactly in the footsteps of its predecessor with five short horrifying segments that lack a strong central thread tying them together. Brendan Walsh of Screen Crave praised it, saying: “This time around, it feels like every filmmaker is right in their wheelhouse, presenting a polished, terrifying vision.”

As there are over 400 films playing at this years festival, there are countless others including a selection of short films and a slew of documentaries. Representing 85 countries and featuring 49 world premieres, 47 North American premieres and 18 U.S. premieres, this is sure to be one of the greatest years in SIFF history.

Before you go, check out the awesome little trailers for SIFF 2013 that’s rife with movie references and some cool little claymation:

THE AMAZING SPIDERMAN 2's Dane DeHaan Is Rocking Slicked Hair and Hip Jacket as the New Harry Osborn

Dane DeHaan has emerged as one of the best young actors in the last few years with a handful of dark performances in films like Chronicle, Lawless and The Place Beyond the Pines. Well, DeHaan’s big ticket to stardom has appeared in his casting as Harry Osborn in the new The Amazing Spiderman franchise.

This first look at DeHaan as Osborn doesn’t show much except perhaps a penchant for hair gel and his hipster fashion sense. While Franco is often a lovable oddball, DeHaan has a much more brooding presence so I wouldn’t be surprised if the character was quite a bit different from the prior iteration.

Harry Osbourne is a staple of Spiderman lore and was last played by James Franco in Sam Raimi‘s original trilogy. A foundation of duality to Peter Parker’s double life, Osbourne is both Parker’s best friend and mortal enemy. DeHaan’s place in the trilogy is sure to start out more on the friendly side of the spectrum and it is still to be seen whether or not he will eventually fill the shoes of the villain like Franco did in the over-crowded Spiderman 3. Sitting where I am, it seems like this franchise is at least trying to go in a new direction so I doubt that DeHaan will go baddy in the next film or two. If the series extends past a trilogy though, I’m sure he might morph into the New Goblin after all.

The Amazing Spiderman 2 will see the return of director Marc Webb and stars Andrew Garfield and Emma Stone but also features a whole cast of new actors including DeHaanShailene WoodleyPaul GiamattiFelicity Jones, Chris Cooper, and Sally Field. The Amazing Spiderman 2 opens May 2, 2014.

Hemsworth and Portman Share Hairstylist, Cloaks AND Smiles in Bland THOR: THE DARK WORLD Photo

With the debut trailer arriving tomorrow, Marvel Studio is trying to churn up interest in Thor: The Dark World with this truly lackluster photo. Stars Chris Hemsworth and Natalie Portman seem to be having a jolly old time chilling in cloaks with their billowy locks tossed about but this isn’t exactly the epic god-of-thunder antics that will get fanboys and superhero fans in seats. Since the Grecian architecture and Padiwan robes here clearly don’t resemble anything you’d see on modern day Planet Earth, I guess the picture is slightly revealing in that Portman’s character, plain Jane, must have teleported to Thor’s home planet (realm?) of Asgard.

The first poster for Thor: The Dark World showed off Thor’s mighty-sized arm amid a storm of CGI and was equally lacking in intrigue. I’m sure that the trailer tomorrow will be sure to seize some attention though. Until then, I guess you can look at this lame picture.

Thor 2 is directed by Game of Thrones helmer Alan Taylor and stars Chris Hemsworth, Natalie PortmanTom Hiddleston, Stellan Skarsgård, Idris Elba, Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje, Kat Dennings, Ray Stevenson, Zachary Levi, Tadanobu Asano, Jaimie Alexander, Rene Russo, and Anthony Hopkins and opens in theaters on November 8, 2013.

Jaimee Foxx's Electro Was a Major Nerd Before He Blue Himself in THE AMAZING SPIDERMAN 2

Before he blue himself, Jaime Foxx’s character did not look so hot as Max Dillon, the man who turns into Electro in The Amazing Spiderman 2. He’s rocking the comb-over equivalent of squid-ink angel hair pasta and sporting pre-Heisenberg Walter White glasses. At least after some kind of electricity accident, he turns into a cross-breed between an Avatar Na’vi and Star War‘s Emperor Palpatine in this first look.

Let’s hope that the villain’s motivation are a little stronger in this sequel than they were for The Amazing Spiderman where Curt Conners wanted to make everyone a lizard because…lizards are STRONGER! If this snapshot is any indication, the internal struggle of this dude seems to stem from his total lack of a social life. It’s pretty clear he’s not the belle-of-the-ball (that “style” hardly ever is an effective lady-killer look) and seems to have developed a little crush on Spiderman and orange yarn so why NOT like become a lightning-powered super-villian and hunt down the spider-influenced vigilante? Motivation: solved.

The Amazing Spiderman 2 will see the return of director Marc Webb and stars Andrew Garfield and Emma Stone but also features a whole cast of new actors including Dane DeHaanShailene WoodleyPaul GiamattiFelicity Jones, Chris Cooper, and Sally Field. The Amazing Spiderman 2 opens May 2, 2014.

Thor Holds Hammer, Has Big Arm in First Poster for THOR: THE DARK WORLD

This first poster for Thor 2 may be simple and boring and a result of lazy Photoshopping but hey, it’s something. He holds a hammer, a lightning does a strike and his golden, godly locks are a-blowin’.

Two years ago, I was down on the whole Avengers prospect but I will admit that I was won over by the one-two-punch of Thor, Captain America and The Avengers. Light fare though they may be, they were perfectly entertaining, albeit formulaic, and were all the razzle-dazzle spectacle to keep my inner-nerd at bay.

But now that Phase One of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (a mouthful, I know) is complete, we begin the descent into the second act of the journey. After the massive influence of The Empire Strikes Back, act two’s generally take on a darker tone and attempt to dig into the characters more. After Joss Whedon’s promise that the second Avengers movie will be “more personal” and will include more “awful” things taking place, we can assume that Phase Two will adopt a darker tone in general.

Thor 2 is directed by Game of Thrones helmer Alan Taylor andstars Chris Hemsworth, Natalie PortmanTom Hiddleston, Stellan Skarsgård, Idris Elba, Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje, Kat Dennings, Ray Stevenson, Zachary Levi, Tadanobu Asano, Jaimie Alexander, Rene Russo, and Anthony Hopkins and opens in theaters on November 8, 2013.

First Posters for 300: RISE OF AN EMPIRE and ONLY GOD FORGIVES

300: Rise of an Empire and Only God Forgives may have a few similarities – gruesome violence, hard R-rating – but I don’t think that there is much to tie the two films together outside the fact that I have brand spankin’ new posters for each of them. One poster is swattered in a tasteful string of neon lights while the other features a bare-chested, muscle-bound warrior. Care to guess which is which

300: Rise of an Empire will follow the exploits of Greek general Themistokles played by Sullivan Stapleton and his relatively untrained militia as they battle the seemingly limitless Persian army at sea under the command of Artemesia (Eva Green).

Nicolas Winding Refn‘s follow-up to the near perfect Drive, Only God Forgives follows Julian, played by Ryan Gosling, an irreverent drug-slinger in Bangkok and his rivalry with the local police chief, a rivalry that can only be settled in the Muay Thai boxing ring. Check out the red-band trailer here.
