AMERICAN HUSTLE's Stacked Cast Gets Character Posters

Anyone invested in this year’s Oscar season already has their eye on David O. Russell‘s American Hustle. Starring Christian Bale, Amy Adams, Bradley Cooper, Jennifer Lawrence, and Jeremy Renner, American Hustle tells the somewhat true story of ABSCAM and is poised to be an Oscar frontrunner. While it’s chances at nabbing the biggest slice of the pie are largely unknown (since no one has actually seen it yet), O. Russell’s track record with getting his actors nominated are inimitably high.

For his last film, Silver Linings Playbook, he earned nominations for Bradley Cooper, Robert DeNiro, and Jennifer Lawrence – with Lawrence taking the win. His film prior to that, The Fighter, got four nominations. That pack included Mark Wahlberg, Amy Adams, Christian Bale, and Mellisa Leo – with Leo and Bale both taking home gold.

Considering his gilded track record and the caliber of talent on this project, it’s safe to say that we can expect a high number of Oscar-qualifying performances from American Hustle.

For now, take a look at these character posters and let me know who you think is most likely to get nominated out of these five. Personally, I give the edge to Bale and Adams because both seem to have juicy character roles, but all five are potential contenders.

JACK RYAN: SHADOW RECRUIT Poster Comes As Tom Clancy Goes

If you haven’t yet heard, Tom Clancy, best-selling American espionage author, has passed away at the age of 66. While I wouldn’t call myself a “huge Clancy fan,” I’ve read a few of his novels (“Rainbow Six” was my favorite) and took a stab at a couple of the many, many games that he’s lent his name to. His most famous character though, Jack Ryan, lives on.

Having already been depicted on screen by Alec Baldwin, Ben Affleck and, most famously, Harrison Ford, Chris Pine is now stepping into the role to hopefully launch a new franchise. Following in the footsteps of Clear and Present Danger, Patriot Games, The Hunt for Red October, and The Sum of All Fears, Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit will take the ex-marine back to his roots, wrapping him up with a Russian terrorist plot.

The fact that this poster is being released directly on the heels of Clancy’s passing is a little unsettling and, at least, suggests that perhaps the studio is trying to capitalize on his death. Hopefully the intent is not so nefarious, as a man as influential as Clancy deserves more respect than that.

Directed by Kenneth Branagh (who also plays the villain in the film), Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit will also feature Keira Knightley, Kevin Costner, Nonso Anozie, and David Paymer. For now, the film is slated for a Christmas release but, considering the many turning tides of films lately, it’s been rumored to be moving back into January territory. The fact that we’ve yet to see a trailer lends credence to that rumor.

Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit is directed by Kenneth Branagh and stars Chris Pine, Keira Knightley, Kevin Costner, Nonso Anozie, and David Paymer. It’s currently set up for a Christmas, 2013 release.

Michael Bay Returns with First TRANSFORMERS: AGE OF EXTINCTION Poster

After Michael Bay‘s alleged retirement from the Transformers franchise, a little bit of fancy footwork from the Paramount studio (and by fancy footwork I mean Heisenberg-styled drums of cash) has the man back behind the camera for Transformers 4, which is now officially titled Transformers: Age of Extinction.

Although original-trilogy star Shia LaBeouf has stepped away from this fourth giant robot punching each other film, Bay has filled his shoes with wildcard Marky Mark Wahlberg. While there is no official synopsis yet from the studio, a “leaked” idea of the film, per RopeofSilicon, has the Autobots and Decepticons out of the picture:

“As humanity picks up the pieces, following the conclusion of Transformers: Dark of the Moon, Autobots and Decepticons have all but vanished from the face of the planet. However, a group of powerful, ingenious businessman and scientists attempt to learn from past Transformer incursions and push the boundaries of technology beyond what they can control – all while an ancient, powerful Transformer menace sets Earth in his crosshairs. The epic adventure and battle between good and evil, freedom and enslavement ensues.”

Early reports point to the newest faction of shape-shifting-robots will involve a species known as the Dinobots who, you guessed it!, are dinosaurs/robots. While I’m all for injecting dinosaurs into the mainstream as often as possible, the fact that dinosaurs are, uh, extinct kinda makes them stick out more than, say, a 18-wheeler truck or a Toyota. It’s not like we’d walk down the street and think, “Nothing to worry about here. That’s definitely not a robot, just a T-Rex.”

Transformers: Age of Extinction is directed by Michael Bay and stars Mark Walhberg, Nicola Peltz, Stanley Tucci, Kelsey Grammar, T.J. Miller and Sophia Myles. It hits theaters on June 27, 2014.

Damon, Clooney, Murray Cock Furrowed Brows for MONUMENTS MEN Poster

In George Clooney‘s latest everythingman vehicle (he wrote, directed and starred), The Monuments Men, he plays a solider/art appreciator tasked with gathering together a troop of soldiers, art historians and museum curators. Intent on rescuing priceless works of art from the grip of the notoriously burny Nazis, Clooney is joined by Matt Damon, Bill Murray, Jean Dujardin, Bob Balaban, Hugh Bonneville and John Goodman. Their goal: infiltrate Nazi-occupied Germany and France and pull out the gems of the past before history is destroyed forever.

The first trailer poised the film as something with more a comedic bent than most were expecting. Considering Clooney’s Midas touch when it comes to Oscar involvement though, I have a hard time believing that a well-measure dose of comedy will put a stop to it’s already rumpus Oscar chances.

The Monuments Men is written, starring and directed by George Clooney. It also stars Matt Damon, Bill Murray, Cate Blanchett, Jean Dujardin, Bob Balaban, Hugh Bonneville and John Goodman. It hits theaters in the thick of Oscar season on December 18.

First Poster for Terry Gilliam's THE ZERO THEOREM

Terry Gilliam‘s career is defined by a certain eccentricity and a willingness to stretch the mind of his audience. Responsible for films such as Monty Python, 12 Monkeys and Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, Gilliam takes pleasure in dipping into the strangeness of the world and his latest, The Zero Theorem follows that trend closely.

Starring Christoph Waltz, the story follows Qohen Leth, a reclusive computer genius who lives in an Orwellian corporate world and suffers from existential angst. Under the instruction of a shadowy figure known only as “Management”, Qohen works to solve the “Zero Theorem” – a mathematical formula which will finally determine whether life has any meaning. Qohen’s work in the burnt-out chapel that serves as his home is interrupted by visits from Bainsley, a seductive woman, and Bob, the teenage son of Management. Waltz is accompanied by Tilda Swinton, Matt Damon, Ben Whishaw, and David Thewlis.

The Zero Theorem is directed by Terry Gilliam and stars Christoph Waltz, Tilda Swinton, Matt Damon, Ben Whishaw, and David Thewlis. It opens December 20.

THOR: THE DARK WORLD Gets Dull Poster

In a bit of inner-studio mimicry, the latest poster for Thor: The Dark World looks quite a bit like this summer’s poster for Iron Man 3. While many have taken shots at Marvel for using a similar formula for their films, it seems that they are now applying that formula to posters.

From the slightly cocked, minorly confuzzled and majorly concerned face of the heroine with her one hand on her man’s right pectoral, to the foreboding yet flexing stance of the hero, to the secondary characters superimposed in the background, and a big villain’s head looming in the distance, it’s a cluttered and failed attempt at a Photoshop job that just comes off as rushed, copied and, well, bad.

For comparisons sake, take a look at this poster for Iron Man 3 and see just how similar they look. With this new poster, expect another trailer to follow soon. If you missed the first trailer, check it out here.

Thor 2 is directed by Game of Thrones helmer Alan Taylor andstars Chris Hemsworth, Natalie PortmanTom Hiddleston, Stellan Skarsgård, Idris Elba, Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje, Kat Dennings, Ray Stevenson, Zachary Levi, Tadanobu Asano, Jaimie Alexander, Rene Russo, and Anthony Hopkins and opens in theaters on November 8, 2013.

First Look at Ginsberg Murder Mystery KILL YOUR DARLINGS

Godawful poster aside, Kill Your Darlings is a film worth looking into. Actor Daniel Radcliffe seems to be doing everything in his power to expunge his association with the eponymous character from the Harry Potter saga, this time taking the mantle of the beatnik bard, Allen Ginsberg. The film centers around a murder that draws the superheroes of the beatnik generation, Allen Ginsberg, Jack Kerouac and William Burroughs, together Avengers-style.

With stars Radcliffe and Dane DeHaan giving this film a powerful soul and first time director John Krokidas taking the beatnik generation in a new and inspired direction, this walked away from this year’s Sundance Film Festival with mostly positive buzz. While it’s not slated to go wide anywhere yet, Kill Your Darlings will see a limited release on October 18.

Kill Your Darlings is directed by John Krokidas and stars Daniel Radcliffe, Dane Dehaan, Michael C. Hall, Ben Foster, Elizabeth Olsen, Jack Huston, Davis Cross and Jennifer Jason Leigh. It hits limited theaters on October 18.

More Character Posters for THE HUNGER GAMES: CATCHING FIRE Than You Could Dream Of

With a total of no less than 11 character posters, Liongate is really amping up the marketing for The Hunger Games: Catching Fire in preparation for its November 11 release. Following up on the wild success of the first installment, Catching Fire brings us back to Panem for the Quarter Quell where 11 previous winners of the Hunger Games are forced back into the arena to duke it out again. Why? you ask. Well because Katniss totally showed up President Snow and now he’s gotta snuff that flame. Cue Bane: “The fire rises.”

For this first batch of character posters, we’re only getting a look at the contestants in the Quarter Quell. Included are Jennifer Lawrence as Katniss, Josh Hutcherson as Peeta, Jena Malone as Johanna, Alan Ritchson as Gloss, Sam Claflin as Finnick, Amanda Plummer as Wiress, Jeffrey Wright as Beetee, Stephanie Leigh Schlund as Cashmere, Meta Golding as Enobaria, Lynn Cohen as Mags and Bruno Gunn as Brutus.

But don’t expect this to be the end of this marketing blitz as there are many characters who aren’t even yet included such as Donald Sutherland‘s President Snow, Elizabeth Banks‘s Effie, Liam Hemsworth‘s Gale and Woody Harrelson‘s Haymitch.

Poster for GODZILLA Reboot is Actually Pretty Sweet

I kind of want to kick myself for saying it but I really like this Comic Con teaser poster for the next big installation in the monster king himself: Godzilla. As more of a remake of Toho‘s classic – not to be confused with the Roland Emmerich version with Matthew Broderick – than a continuation of any kind, we can all pray that it’ll be better than Pacific Rim.

Directed by Gareth Edwards (Monsters) and stars Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Elizabeth Olsen, Bryan Cranston, Ken Watanabe and Juliette Binoche, it really has an unbelievable stacked cast which gives me faith that they must have some confidence in the vision behind this one.
